I am a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. I have been a Life Member since 1971 and for many years before that I was an Annual Member. The NRA is doing all that it can to help Americans preserve their right to “. . . keep and bear arms as set forth in the 2nd Amendment to our Constitution. Thanks to the NRA and other groups fighting for our rights to be free citizens we still have the right (to own and use firearms) to protect ourselves against aggressors as well as our own government. The NRA supports shooting programs for the 4-H clubs as well as the Boy Scouts of America. Here’s your chance to help the NRA support such programs.
NORTHEAST INDIANA FRIENDS OF THE NRA ANNUAL FUNDRAISING BANQUET
Come enjoy a fun filled evening with fellow shooters and outdoor enthusiasts. This annual event is held to raise funds in support of local shooting sports and education. 50% of the proceeds are given in the form of grants to local Indiana programs. The other 50% of the proceeds is forwarded to the NRA Foundation (a 501″(3) tax-exempt charitable organization), to support National Shooting Programs. The event will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at THE SHILOH HALL, 3127 Carroll Road in Fort Wayne – everyone is welcome – you need not be a member of the National Rifle Association to attend. Doors open at 5:30pm with dinner at 6:30pm. Tickets are $30 per person – all sales stop March 9th – no dinner tickets sold at the door. There will be door prizes, games, drawings, and an auction. Tables of 8 are available with your company name visible for $240. Receipts will be issued.
CAMP ATTERBURY TO REQUIRE HUNTER EDUCATION
Beginning with the spring turkey season this year, hunter education certification will be required for all hunters using Camp Atterbury Maneuver Training Center in central Indiana. The requirement is set to comply with U.S. Army regulations and applies to all hunting, including turkey, deer and small game. “Security and safety are of the utmost importance,” said Kenneth Newlin, Camp Atterbury post commander. “We’re confident that those who have completed DNR’s hunter education course know what they need to do to stay safe in the field.”
Other Indiana military areas, such as Newport and Crane, also require hunter education. These areas are currently closed to hunting due to national security concerns. Newlin anticipates that limited hunting will be open this year on Camp Atterbury, but he warns that military training and tightened security could halt hunting access at any time. Hunting during established hunting seasons will remain open at DNR’s Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. Hunter education is recommended for all hunters and required for hunters born after 1986. Salomon Farm is the perfect location for hiking, cross-country skiing, bird watching and much more. Stop by for a visit – their hours are from sunrise to sunset. Park in the Learning Center parking lot to avoid disturbing the Salomon family in the farmhouse. Call 427-6008 for more information.
Become a Wild Walker!
Explore some of northeast Indiana’s finest outdoor areas with this nature-oriented group. The Wild Walkers will kick off the 2004 season with a light breakfast and a short hike at Salomon Farm on Friday, February 20. The group meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month from 8am to 10pm for a walk on the wild side. The program is free but you need to register to attend. Donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of the breakfast. Ages 18+. Call 427-6008 to register; the deadline is February 18, 2004.
Next up, why not try Tai Chi? This adapted form of Tai Chi combines toning moves into a gentle strength training exercise that can be performed even if you are wheelchair-bound or just have trouble moving. It’s fitness made fun! Join the group on Monday mornings from 9am to 10am. The cost is 50 cents per class. Ages 50+. Location is at the Community Center, 233 W. Main Street, downtown Fort Wayne. Golf in winter? The Shoaff, McMillen, and Foster Golf Course clubhouses will open for the season on March 15, 2004. In the meantime give the Golf Dome a call at 432-8783; they’re at 5702 Engle Road and get into the swing of things.
Fox Island Fun – Call Fox Island at 260-449-3180 for their cross-country ski schedule and for information on their other outdoor/indoor activities. They are located at 7324 Yohne Road.
They are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 6pm. (Closed Mondays).
ACRES OF FUN! Call ACRES at 260-422-1004 for information on joining their organization and ask for their ACRES Winter Quarterly bulletin. ACRES is an organization that is “. . . dedicated to the preservation of natural lands in Northeastern Indiana.” They maintain nature preserves, and invite members (sometimes the public) to come and enjoy nature. Most areas have hiking trails and signs to tell you which way to go. Go out and enjoy the wildflowers, bird watching, hiking, and photography. Sorry, no hunting or fishing allowed and it is recommended that you “. . . take pictures and leave footprints, only.” As far as picnics are concerned – if you carry it in, carry it out.
