THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Wayne Township is always reaching out to community partners and one of our great partnerships is with the United Way’s First Call For Help, one of the first lines of communication reaching out to the people in need. They have done many great things to be involved and connect people with social service organizations for information and referral services. “It is the one-stop connection for finding the help you may need.” First Call For Help is part of a new statewide Indiana 2-1-1 Initiative. 2-1-1 is the national abbreviated dialing code for free access to health and human services information and referral (I&R). 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember number that makes a critical connection between individuals and families in need and community-based organizations and government agencies.

Indiana 2-1-1 Partnership, Inc. is the organization that is planning a 2-1-1 system for this state. IN2-1-1 seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

Hoosiers with needs are connected to human services

More cost effective I&R system, maximizing local and state resources

More uniformity of I&R services

Funders and planners get information about needs and trends

First Call for Help is the endorsed Regional 2-1-1 Center for Northeast Indiana. In November 2003 Allen County became the first full county in Indiana to implement the 2-1-1 dialing code. This means that Allen County residents can simply dial 2-1-1 to reach First Call For Help. On February 11, 2004 six new 2-1-1 centers throughout the state will be launched. On that same day Wells, Huntington and Kosciusko counties will also be able to access First Call For Help with 2-1-1. Eight more surrounding counties will have access to 2-1-1 over the next two years. As the counties are added to the First Call database callers will have access to information about the services offered in their county. This same data is now available on the First Call For Help website at www.firstcallinfo.org.

First Call For Help also partners with Wayne Township in the Emergency Homeless Outreach Team (EHOT), the Emergency Assistance Network (EAN) and a number of other community projects focusing on people in need.

United Way’s First Call For Help is just another example of how community partnerships improve the quality of life in our community we respect their commitment, we recognize the need for their services and we applaud their dedication.
