In my last column I shared with you the wonderful news that the City of Fort Wayne placed first in its population category in the Center for Digital Government’s Digital Cities Survey. Today I am happy to announce that the City is expanding its offering of online services.
The City’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department has created a new interactive map web page on the City’s website, www.cityoffortwayne.org. The new web page allows visitors to our website to view City government maps and geographic information from their computer. The new maps demonstrate our commitment to providing online services.
The map web page contains multiple theme-based layers that users can turn on and off as desired. Users can perform location searches by address, street, park or neighborhood association. This variety of functionality and features means the maps will benefit a wide range of users. Developers and businesses can access maps of sewer and water service areas and zoning information without making a phone call or visiting the City-County Building. Educators can use City Council district, neighborhood association and census tract maps to help students understand the different functions of City government. Residents with an interest in historic districts, parks, garbage and recycling pickup days and annexations will be able to view maps about those topics online.
This new web-based mapping system is a tremendous asset to our community. The City of Fort Wayne is one of just a handful of municipalities in the country with an interactive map web page designed to meet the needs of residents, developers, educators and businesses.
