BOWLING SINCE 1940

Carl Metker has lived at his home on Old Trail Road since he had it built in 1957. He was born on November 3rd, 1914 and is secretary of the GE Seniors Bowling League. Carl went to work at GE in 1934, and retired in 1974. While at GE he worked for Specialty Motors Group.

I caught up with Carl on Monday morning, January 12, at the GE Club Bowling Alleys just off of Broadway on Swinney Avenue.

The building that houses the GE Bowling Club was completed in 1927. Brent Cleveland has been managing the Club for 23 years. The GE Club hosts men’s bowling leagues at 6:00pm on Monday and Thursday, men’s seniors on Mondays at 10:00am and mixed leagues on Friday at 7:00pm. Automatic pin sitters were added in 1951 and during the 77 years of bowling, there have been only 2 recorded 300-games. Greg Wiley bowled one in the mid-eighties and Robin Klopsenstein bowled the other on September 20th, 1993. I asked Brent why there were so few 300-games over the years. He said some felt it was due to the high humidity in the below ground environment. Carl has been bowling there since 1940. His best series was a 635, which he bowled at Village Bowl, and his high game was a 250 at Main Bowl in Columbia City.

In 1972, Carl and his team won the City Handicap Bowling Tournament that was held at Westward Lanes. His team was sponsored by Sharkey’s Appliance here in Waynedale. Team members included: Elmer Asbell and Don Stapleton (deceased), Paul Long, Oliver Chester and himself.

Carl has been married to his wife Ardola for 53 years. They were married on July 4th, 1950 and have a daughter, Janice Muir, who lives in Boston. They have 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Ardola also bowls with the senior league, but has not been bowling recently due to an injury.
