MOORE OWES SUCCESS TO LUERS COACH EGTS
A year ago, Lance Corporal Tony Moore was enjoying the afterglow of a Bishop Luers State Championship football victory over Southridge at the RCA Dome. Forty days from now, he will probably be in Iraq. Tony joined the Marines about four months ago in the Deferred Enlistment Program. He graduated from Luers in May, and the Marines called him in August to start his basic training. He did Basic in San Diego, where he was named the # 1 recruit out of 478 fellow Marines.
Tony says he owes his success in part to line coach Egts from his four years on the Bishop Luers Football Team. He was also a key player in the early days with the Luers lacrosse team, which is growing not only at Luers but also throughout Fort Wayne. Tony now has a goal to try to start a lacrosse team within the Marines.
Tony’s father, Kevin Moore, is also a Luers graduate from ’68. Kevin was in Vietnam from 1970-1971, serving in the USAF. He was stationed at Bien Hoa, in the Security Service (data gathering).
I asked Tony if there were any parallels between his football workouts and his basic training, he said, “Both programs were similar as far as conditioning, but the Marines break you down first and then build you back up. Reveille was at 0500 hrs. and taps was at 2900 hrs. In between reveille and taps there was constant activity, either mental or physical with the emphasis on the physical.”
Tony will have 20 days before Christmas and 20 days after Christmas for further orientation to prepare him for the 6 months to a year he will be in Iraq. He is currently assigned to 3rd Battalion, Mike Company, US Marines.
