MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD

November is an important month in the history of our nation. This month we exercise our democratic right to vote. We honor the tens of thousands of men and women who have risked their lives for our freedom. We take time to reflect on how we came to be Americans. We say thank you for the life and opportunity this nation has provided us.

Election Day is just one reason we have to be grateful to live in America. On this day, we go to the polls and choose the candidates we want to represent our interests in government. Thomas Paine said, “The right of voting for representation is the primary right by which other rights are protected.”

This month also marks the 85th year the nation has recognized Veterans’ Day. This day honors those who have served on active, reserve or guard duty, and those who served during times of peace as well as war. The dynamics of the world have changed and America faces threats much greater than those in the past. I hope all of you will take a moment to remember the National Guard members who recently returned to our City after nearly a year of deployment in the Middle East. The soldiers of the 293rd infantry are honorable men who left behind family, friends and jobs to help fight the war.

Finally, this month we reflect upon our rights and freedoms with Thanksgiving. It is a time to spend with family and friends. It is a time to reflect on all of the wonderful things in our lives. And, again, it is another time for Americans to be grateful. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our freedom, opportunities, knowledge, health and welfare.

As you go about your normal routine this month, take time to remember those who came before us and sacrificed so much to build and protect our nation. Remember the people who settled this land, those that established our democratic way of life and those who risked everything to protect that way of life.
