TUFWC TO FEATURE TOM RUST
Tom Rust, Indiana University men’s basketball chaplain will be the guest speaker for the Taylor TUFWC Alumni chapel at 10am, Friday, September 27, at First Missionary Church, 701 W. Rudisill Blvd., to kick off the campus’ Homecoming/Parents’ Weekend activities. Rust, from the class of 1972, played basketball while a student at Fort Wayne Bible College (now TUFWC) and served as the college’s sports editor.

USF PATHWAYS ART AUCTION TO BENEFIT HOMELESS AND RUNAWAY CHILDREN
What: Pathways Art Auction hosted by Mimi and Ian Rolland
When: Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 9pm.
Where: Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center, USF, Leesburg Road between Spring Street and Main Street.
Cost: $75/person or $100/couple. Casual attire/western optional. Hors d’oeuvres provided and cash bar.
Entertainment: Provided by Mark and Kedrah
Note: Pathways was founded in 1991 by Dr. Michel Sturm to help homeless and runaway children ages 12 to 21 and to provide crisis intervention and emergency shelter for these vulnerable youths. These children, who are not served by the judicial system or the child protective service program, “fall through the cracks.” Pathways is committed to providing the much-needed resources to help give these children a chance to succeed. NURSING AND ART LEAD INCREASED ENROLLMENT AT USF
USF announced recently that total enrollment has increased to 1,739 students on its campus in Fort Wayne, the highest number in recent years. Leading the way among a number of academic programs showing increases are the departments of Nursing and Art and Visual Communication. The number of Nursing students has increased from 365 (Fall 2001) to 451 (Fall 2002), and increase of 23%. The department of Art and Visual Communication showed a total increase in enrollment of 9.8% from 204 student in 2001 to 224 in 2002. Residence hall requests exceeded capacity for the fall semester with some students being housed in a local apartment complex and additional dormitory space created from lunge areas for other students.
BISHOP LUERS HIGH SCHOOL
BLHS CONSTITUTION ASSEMBLY
BLHS will be having a Constitutional Assembly on Constitution Day, September 17, 2002 at 9:35am in the Bishop Luers’ gym. All seniors will be attending and they will receive a colored poster of the Constitution. This event is sponsored by Chik-Fil-A.
BLHS TO OFFER DRIVERS ED
BLHS will offer Drivers Ed this fall if there is enough students interested. The classroom session will be September 3, 2002 through September 26, 2002 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Driving times will begin on October 7th. The class will be limited to 28 students. Cost is $290 for BLHS students and #310 for all others. BLHS TO HOLD FUNDRAISER
BLHS will hold its Annual Student Fundraiser Friday, October 4, 2002. The 22nd Annual Walk-A-Thon is scheduled to begin in the school gymnasium at 9:15am following an all school mass. The Walk travels through south Fort Wayne area neighborhoods and Foster Park. Each of Luers’ 624 students is asked to raise a minimum of $60 in order to participate in the walk. The money raised is to support general operating expenses for Bishop Luers High School. The goal for the school this year is $36,000.
CONCORDIA LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL
CLHS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NEW ZOLLNER FOOTBALL STADIUM
CLHS has announced plans to build a new football stadium. The facility will seat 2,000 and cost approximately $1.4 million. It will be named the Fred Zollner Memorial Stadium. The current stadium was built in 1947 by the late Fred Zollner, a local manufacturing entrepreneur and owner of the Zollner Corporation. The old stadium was constructed for his world champion fast-pitch softball team, the Zollner Pistons. The stadium is currently being shared by both Concordia Lutheran High School and Bishop Dwenger High School.
Current plans are to raze the present stadium in January of 2003, hold a ground breaking for the new one as soon as possible thereafter, and complete the new stadium by the beginning of the Fall-2003 football season. W. A. Sheets and Sons, Inc., will act as construction manager.
U.S. COMMISSION FOR SCHOLASTIC ASSISTANCE
COLLEGE TUITION ASSISTANCE
A conservative estimate of college costs for a full-time student runs from $10,000-$30,000; high cost colleges can run from $40,000-$100,000! Most parents and students think that scholarships are only for the students with excellent grades, low-income families, or the athletically inclined. A small example of the numerous scholarship available to students include: Handicapped Student Scholarship, Members of a Church Scholarships, Scholarships for “C” Students, Veteran Children’s Scholarship, Scholarships for Minorities and much, much more.
Though the majority of scholarships are from the Federal Government and are merit and/or need-based, billions of dollars are available to students from private sector scholarships. Much or private sector financial aid goes unused because the parents and students do not know how or where to apply.
There are organizations that have spent hundreds of hours in research locating scholarship sources. The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance – College Bound is such an organization and supplies the public with over 900 different private scholarships sources. The scholarship list include the scholarship names, addresses, application deadlines, summaries about the scholarships and the amount the scholarship will pay your child.
Many scholarships pay the entire tuition; others can be applied towards tuition, living expenses, and/or other fees. Most scholarships can be used at junior colleges, career and vocational schools, 4-year colleges, graduate schools, medical and law schools. Headed in the Right Direction by Nicole Mahler, Junior at Elmhurst High School
High expectations and a number of goals ride on the affects of the numerous adjustments made this fall at Elmhurst High School.
Elmhurst started out this year with a new football coach, new principal and new system of scheduling.
The new football coach, Roosevelt Norfleet, approached this season with his mind already set on what he thought needed to be done. He approached it with confidence and determination. Roosevelt said, “My goal this season is to get better from practice to practice and game to game.”
Elmhurst was also introduced to a new principal, Laura Taliaferro. Mrs. Taliaferro was an administrator at North Side High School. She entered Elmhurst with excitement and enthusiasm. Taliaferro said, “My main goals are: to get to know the Elmhurst community, increase student achievement, and to create a community of learners.” She said, “The students not only need but deserve an education.”
In addition to the alterations in staff, Elmhurst was introduced to the four by four system. The new four by four system allows for 85 minute classes with less class switching.
The Elmhurst students and staff started this year on the right track and have an exciting year ahead of them.
