Have you noticed our younger generation/generations lately? If they aren’t in front of the TV, the computer, or playing with a GAMEBOY they’re “bored”. What ever happened to: flying kites, playing marbles, sandlot stickball, playing catch, hide and seek, reading, playing Barbie, building with Lincoln Logs, baking cookies, fishing for bluegills, whittling, playing fort, yo-yoing, going for a walk, riding a bike, hobbies, canoeing, target shooting, skipping rocks, or even visiting the library?????? The list could go on and on and on and on; you get the idea. Use your imagination; don’t be “bored” this summer.
SUMMER ASTRONOMY
Boldly go where you have never gone before – to classes about astronomy! Take four nights out of August and expand your horizons to infinity with Education Director Bob Dispenza. The first night will be about observing and stars, the second about constellations, the third about the solar system, and the last about galaxies, nebulae and other distant objects. This series for adults begins on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 and ends Saturday, August 24, 2002. The hours are 7:30pm to 9pm each night. Class fee is $20 for the series, and includes all handout materials. Call 449-3180 to reserve your space. Meet at the Fox Island Nature Center, 7324 Yohne Road. We will be observing with telescopes after each class (weather permitting). Bring binoculars or telescopes and insect repellent.
SCUBA DIVE AT FOX ISLAND COUNTY PARK
Join Naturalist Jodi Leamon and Dr. Warren Pryor of St. Francis to learn about freshwater mussels at 9pm on Saturday, August 17th at the Nature Center. Bowman Lake at Fox Island has its own bed of these extremely important and threatened creatures whose lives are much more interesting than you may think! After the talk, certified divers will have the opportunity to dive the lake between the hours of 11am and 2pm. Fox Island staff will haul equipment to the lake, and Earth Adventures will provide safety divers. Bring lunch, your own or rented gear, and SCUBA certification card. AIR RIFLE PROGRAM TO BEGIN
Allen County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will be hosting a 10-week Air Rifle class open to all youth in grades 3-12. The program will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm at the Allen County Fairgrounds starting September 4, 2002.
The cost of the program is $20 per child. All equipment is provided. This series will teach safe handling of air rifles, proper care of equipment, shooting techniques, and ethics of good shooters. Instructors are certified through the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program of Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The class is limited to the first 12 participants who have registered and paid.
