COMMUNITY CALENDAR 7/24/2002

FREE COUNTRY MUSIC CONCERT

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a FREE country music concert at the Foellinger Theater, in Franke Park on Friday, July 26, 2002.  The theater is under roof so the concert is rain or shine.  Parking is adjacent to the theater at no charge.  Music will be by Paula Jo Taylor & LEGACY with her father, country music legend Joe Taylor.  Taylor led his nationally known band, Joe Taylor’s RED BIRDS, for more than 50 years before retiring the group the end of 1998.  At 81, he still appears on occasion as special guest with LEGACY along with his band partner of more than 50 years, Patty Corbett.  His son, Dan Taylor, is drummer.  Other LEGACY members are Dale Dodson on bass, Dean Crum on guitar and 5-string banjo, and Steve Bentz on steel guitar.  Taylor is the recipient of a plaque from Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame signed by EmmyLou Harris as well as Indiana’s highest civilian award, named Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor O’Bannon.

 

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

ALLEN COUNTY PARKS METEOR SHOWER WATCH

Who: Metea County Park What: Telescopic observing of meteors Where: 12621 Union Chapel Road, Leo, Indiana When: Saturday, August 10, from 9pm to midnight. Cost: Park admission is $2 for people 7 and older. NOTE: Every year in mid-August, earth is visited by the Perseid Meteor Shower, when more meteors than usual may be observed.  Come out to the clear skies of Metea County Park to see the meteors streak across the sky, along with telescopic observing of other celestial objects.  See and hold real meteorites that came from “out there.”  Bring lawn chairs or sleeping pads to lie on while you wait for the “shooting stars.”  Meet Education Director Bob Dispenza.  Call 449-3180 for more information.

FOOD FOR THE BODY AND SPIRIT!

This is what is in store at Harvest Free Will Baptist Church, 5903 East Dupont Road in Fort Wayne on Saturday, August 3rd.  The event begins with Garte’s Fish Fry featuring an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4pm to 7pm.  The cost for the fish fry is $6.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12.

The Sixth Annual “SINGING IN THE SON” concert follows the fish fry at 7pm.  Ministering in this year’s concert will be groups, THE SQUIRE PARSONS TRIO and MENDED WINGS.  No admission will be charged for this Southern Gospel concert, but a love offering will be received for the benefit of Child Evangelism Fellowship in memory of Bud Steinman, a founding member of Harvest Free Will Baptist Church and longtime board member of CEF.  A representative of CEF will be present to explain the ministry of that organization.  The church is located off State Road 1, behind the Dairy Queen at the Leo Crossing Shopping Center.  For further information and directions call Pastor Jeff Sloan at 483-2590 or Praise Promotions at 625-3476.

 

 

KWVA MEETING

The meeting of the Korean War Veterans Assn., Indiana Chapter One will resume on August 10th, at the American Legion Post #82 on Harris Road.  Meeting time will be at 9am with breakfast beginning at 8am.  Friends and spouses are welcome.

 

 

UPWARD SOCCER

Who: Avalon Missionary Church What: Soccer Program for all kids in the area K-6th grade. When: Eight weeks – August 17th to October 5th – one-hour games on each  Saturday.  Practice begins week of August 5th with 1-hour practice  each week throughout the season. Where: Games and practices are held at the Avalon Missionary Church’s Family Center, corner of Lower Huntington Road and Airport  Expressway. “SHINE” (Seeking Him In New Experiences) AVALON FINE ARTS MINI-CAMP

The Children’s Ministry Team at Avalon Missionary Church, 1500 Lower Huntington Road, is trying something new and exciting this summer.  Instead of our traditional Vacation Bible School, we are offering children who just completed 1st through 5th grade a chance to explore the fine arts and see how God can use their interests and abilities for His kingdom.  Children will be able to sign up for two areas of interest.  Sessions will be held in the areas of choir, drama, photography, cooking, sculpy (use of clay) and Bible quizzing.  Mini-camp week is scheduled for July 29 through August 1 from 6pm to 8pm each evening.  Registration is only $5 per child.  Registration will be taken beginning Sunday July 7.  For more information contact Janna Worthman, Director of Children’s Ministry, at 747-1531.

Our last garage sale was so popular we’ve decided to change it from an Annual to a Bi-Annual garage sale.  The time of the sale will be announced as soon as we fill up our Scout Cabin Garage again.  This is an opportunity to not only get rid of your old junk but to purchase some terrific bargains.  Got a full garage/basement/attic/lake cottage you want emptied? (Sorry we don’t “clean” garages, basements, and attics, etc – we just pick up sellable items.)  Want to get rid of your old toys, tools, cooking utensils, furniture, antiques, collectibles, and stuff you didn’t get rid of in your last garage sale?  The members of Portage Creek Camp Association (Sponsors of Boy Scout Troop 44), said they are willing to come to your house to pick up your donations.  You may drop off your donations at the Scout Cabin but you must call first and arrange for someone to meet you there.  Please don’t drop anything off in front of the door; it will only get wet or be stolen.  Call and have someone meet you there PLEASE.  We will issue a receipt for your tax-deductible donations.  Take a FREE tour of the Boy Scout Cabin while you’re there.

GIRL SCOUT TROOP TO MEET AT SCOUT CABIN

RILEY HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN FUNDRAISER

The Golf Dome Family & Event Center will sponsor the Harris Cup Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 1pm.  The qualifying tournament will consist of the low 75 entrants during the month of July.  Participants may enter as many times as they wish throughout July simply by purchasing a qualifying attempt for an additional $1 donation to Riley Hospital for Children.  The Golf Dome Family & Event Center will match every $1 donated to equal $2 per entrant for Riley Hospital.  The winner of the August 3 tournament will receive an all expenses paid trip to the Harris Cup National Miniature Golf Finals in Statesboro, Georgia on Saturday, September 28, 2002.

Riley Hospital for Children is one of 170 hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network, a charity organization that provides medical care for 17 million children each year.  In 2001, Children’s Miracle Network raised more than $229 million through fund raising activities like this event.  For more information contact Eric at the Golf Dome Family & Event Center, 432-8783.

FEATURED ARTIST FOR THE MONTH OF JULY

Diane McIntosh is one of the founding members of the Fort Wayne Art Source.  She is a full-time graphic artist.  Diane’s specialty is calligraphy, which she is currently teaching at the FW Art Source.  Diane designs signs, posters, banners, show cards and greeting cards.  She is also gifted in watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil.  Her work will be on display in the paneled room during the month of July.

 

VOLUNTEER VOLLYBALL COACHES NEEDED

The Athletic Department at St. Joseph School, Hessen Cassel is looking for college-age students or any adults that would like to volunteer their time to coaching our girls’ volleyball teams.  We have a 7th Grade and an 8th Grade team that we need coaches for.  If interested, please call Ruth Litchfieldd at 639-3352.

 

 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO DELIVER HOMEBOUND MEALS

Homebound Meals, a non-profit organization, has served the city of Fort Wayne since 1971 and delivers noon meals Monday to Friday to people who are unable to prepare their own meals due to age, illness, or disability.  Special diets are available.  We need volunteer drivers to deliver noon meals once a week Monday through Friday to homebound people who are unable to prepare their own meals.  Contact Judy Gregg at 422-3296.

 

LOCATION FOR OLD FLAG DISPOSAL

The department of Veterans Affairs, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, 2121 Lake Avenue, in co-operation with the K.W.V.A. Quiet Warriors Chapter of Indiana, welcome the community to bring in their worn, torn, and tattered flags for disposal in the proper manner.  There is a flag collection barrel in the main entrance of the VA Hospital.

AN OLD FASHIONED GARDEN TOUR

Who: The Historic South Wayne Neighborhood Association

When: Saturday, July 20 from noon – 3pm

Cost: Early ticket sales are $5, $6 on the day of the tour.  8 plus gardens will be the focus of this walking tour and will include the fountain area and shops at the Broadway Plaza. Ticket Sales, Tour Guides, and an information Booth will be open for business at 11:30am at the South Wayne Baptist Church at 2920 Indiana Ave.

POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE (PAL)

RE:  Football Registration

PAL football registration will be held on the following dates and times:

Monday July 29, 2002  5:30PM to 7:00PM

Tuesday July 30, 2002  3:00PM to 7:00PM

The football league is for kid’s ages 9 to 12 by August 15.  Minimum weight of 65 lbs.  And a birth certificate must be shown.

RUN FOR MORE GREENWAYS 5K TRAIL RUN

The Greenway Consortium, Inc. of Fort Wayne and Allen County will sponsor a new trail run on Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Metea County.  The “Run for More Greenways” 5K Trail Run will start at 7:00 AM.  Metea County Park entrance at the corner of Highway 1 (Leo Road) and Union Chapel just west of Cedarville.

Preregistration is $13 with a T-shirt and $7 without a T-shirt.  There is a $2 fee for registration after July 29.  Runners can register on the day of the race starting at 6:00 AM.

Registration forms are available at the Allen County Park Department at Fox Island on Yohne Road or at the Fort Wayne Parks Department on East State at Parnell in Fort Wayne.  Interested persons may contact race director Mitch Harper for more information at:  436-0739(voice), 436-8284(fax), or mtchharper@aol.com.

Runners also running in the Harlan Days 10K on August 3 can get a $2 refund from the “Run for More Greenways.

 

THE SOUTHSIDE CHILDREN’S MINISTRY NETWORK presents “Let Your Light Shine!” Children’s Back to School Rally!

Several area churches have formed a children’s ministry team in an effort to work together for the children in Waynedale and surrounding area.  Children’s workers are from Mt. Calvary Lutheran, St. Therese, Harvest Family Worship and Avalon Missionary Church.

The rally will be held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 9212 Ridgetree Drive right off of Bluffton Road on Saturday evening, September 14 at 6:00 p.m.  The special speaker for the night will be Marc Hamman.  Marc combines music, drama and zany comedy for a great evening of fun with a message.  Children ages 4 years through 5th grade are invited to this special evening.  More information will be available  as the date for this special event draws closer.
