It seems to me that crime has increased in our lovely normally serene little town of Waynedale, Indiana. Robbery is up, vandalism is up, and people around me are asking me what to do about it. I tell anyone who asks, to join the NRA, purchase a firearm, learn how to use it safely, and then practice with it at a shooting range at least once a month.
The next question is usually, “What kind of firearm?” I tell them, “You don’t have to be an expert marksman with a shotgun but get what you feel comfortable with, be it a .22, .32, 38, .45, 357 Magnum, 20 gauge, 12 gauge, 16 gauge, or just a .410 shotgun.” They will all make a loud enough sound to scare away most robbers and they all have enough bite to serve as protection.
Learn all you can about the weapon you choose. Learn to handle it safely, how to clean it, how to fire it, how to hit what you aim at, and how to store it properly so it won’t constitute a danger to your loved ones especially children and grand children. It wouldn’t hurt to have a toy gun around and use it as a model to show children what to do if they find a firearm laying around somewhere or how to handle it safely if they have to move it.
Some more advice I would give is to make some phone calls (look in your phone directory under guns, gun safety, & marksmanship instruction) and locate someone that will be teaching a hunter/safety course. The Boy Scouts of America offers a program from time to time as well as your local 4-H Club. Also, contact your local police department, sheriff’s office or the state police.

4-H SHOOTING SPORTS .22 PROGRAM
This program will begin January 2, 2002 at 6:30pm at Concordia Lutheran High School, 1601 St. Joe River Drive. All meetings will be held at Concordia Lutheran High School Shooting Range in the school. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants. The program is open to youth in grades 5-12. The cost of the program is $20 – equipment will be provided. Classes will be held on 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings January 2,9,16,23,30, February 6,13,20,27 and March 6, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. For more information call Barb Thuma at 481-6826. Also ask her about adults taking the course or at least standing in watching; you’re bound to learn something.
The WAYNEDALE NEWS will pay for 1 (one) student to take the course IF you stop by the office and pick up the required paperwork ahead of time. You must attend all classes and bring a note from your instructor that you passed. We will then reimburse you ($20) for the cost of the .22 Rifle Class. Good Luck!
HUNTER SAFETY EDUCATION CLASS
Allen County 4-H will be hosting a Hunter Safety Education Class on two Saturdays – February 16 and 23, 2002. Participants must attend both days. This class is limited to 40 participants. This FREE class is co-sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources. The class will be from 8am to 3:30pm both days. Participants are urged to bring a brown bag lunch. It is open to adults and youth. Persons age 12 or younger must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Participants must pre-register. Call 481-6826. This class usually fills up very fast.
