AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHER

I recently saw How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days an incredibly cute and funny romantic comedy staring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. It is about a columnist writing a feature entitled “How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days”. She victimizes an advertiser who made a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days. Hudson is definitely her mother’s (Goldie Hawn) daughter in this film which made me laugh so hard I about cried. McConaughey is adorable and very funny as well. (I only wish he didn’t have to wear a shirt so much.)

In the same day, however, I saw Dare Devil staring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. While Dare Devil was better than last year’s Spiderman it was only better because the fight sequences were much more entertaining. By day, Affleck (The Sum of All Fears) plays Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer. By night, he plays the masked vigilante, Dare Devil. After losing his sight as a boy, Murdock’s other senses are super charged. His sense of hearing is especially strong and acts as a form of radar. Murdock promises his father that he will never give up and will defend those who no one else will, like himself. As an adult, he remembers that promise. Crime is at a high and justice is at a low, so Murdock starts to take the law into his own hands and take revenge for those forsaken by the law. Later, the beautiful Electra, daughter of a sidekick to the King Pin of Crime, joins him. Garner (Alias) kicks butt big time, even if it is just Ben Affleck’s.

For a movie that was basically about glorified murder, Dare Devil wasn’t all that bad. It was pretty violent, however, and I spent a lot of time burying my head in my hands. In my opinion, this comic book to silver screen movie style is getting tired. If I were a comic book junkie I’d probably think differently, but the only comic book I ever owned was The Care Bears issue number four. The plot of this movie wasn’t very strong and the villains were unforgivably cheesy. I mean, a guy named Bullseye who has a target carved in his head? Give me a break! The love story was pretty lame as well. Come on, what respectable girl is not going to tell a guy her name one day, and sleep with him the next?

As far as acting is concerned, Affleck was good. He was very convincing as a blind man. Garner (the female James Bond of our day) isn’t that talented an actor, but she is incredibly entertaining. Who knew a person could fight like that? I didn’t.

Overall, Dare Devil was not worth my ticket money. The only thing that it has going for it is Jennifer Garner and her amazing fight scenes. Well, that and the fact that tons of pubescent girls flocked to see Ben Affleck in tight red leather. (That wouldn’t be me, of course.) If you really want to see it, wait until it is released on DVD or VHS. Otherwise, go see Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey (sans red leather) instead.
