ON THE CAPTURE OF SADDAM HUSSEIN

U.S. Representative Mark Souders’ Statement

Saddam Hussein’s capture will hopefully reduce the tragic loss of life of our soldiers working to build the peace in Iraq. I am deeply thankful for our brave men and women in uniform whose sacrifice; hard work and patience made this happen. While coalition troops ended Saddam’s brutal regime in April, the tyrant’s elusiveness compelled some former Baathists to wage a guerrilla war against a Free Iraq.

Despite constant criticism, George Bush stayed the course. I am thankful that he is our President. Defeating terrorism would be impossible with leaders who changed their views after every negative editorial or new poll. Bringing Saddam to justice will go a long way to helping the decades-long gash he inflicted on his country to heal. A fair, transparent, and orderly trial will demonstrate to the Iraqi citizenry that justice is patient, no matter how awful the crime.

It is important to remember that the imprisonment of Iraq’s former totalitarian dictator will not lead to the end of hostilities against our soldiers in Iraq. Dangerous-and increasingly desperate remnants of the old regime remain at large and they will be keen to demonstrate their defiance. Moreover, we must not forget that international terrorism is a much bigger problem than just Saddam and bin Laden.

Saturday’s victory, however, is a very important step. Saddam’s capture will improve our long-term chances of establishing democracy in Iraq and of safeguarding our security here at home.

Senator Evan Bayh’s Statement

The capture of Saddam Hussein is unmitigated good news for the Iraqi people and also for the American forces who are trying to establish peace in that country. This is good news for the entire world, any time a dictator is brought to justice.

While representing the close of a significant chapter in our efforts to build a secure Iraq, it does not ensure the country’s future success. We still have a long, extensive and dangerous road ahead of us, and we should not delude ourselves in any way that would slow or end the process to stabilizing Iraq and win the fight for freedom.

We will need to stay the course, and not just remove the yoke of Saddam Hussein, but ensure that that yoke is not replaced by another. We must make sure that the country does not become a hotbed for terrorism and instability that would eventually harm the United States and our people.

The sacrifices our military is making in this overall effort probably represent one of the most noble causes that our country has been involved in. We should be proud of liberating the 26 million people in Iraq and should remember that this is why it is important to stick it out to its successful conclusion.
