COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

I’m concerned about the future of the local VA Hospital. The federal government recently decided to shut down the inpatient beds at the VA. This decision was based at least in part on data regarding current utilization of those inpatient beds. For years veterans have been told not to go to the VA emergency room if they are ill and they have been discouraged from utilizing the VA Hospital for inpatient care; that fact has obviously affected the VA’s statistics. There are tens of thousands of veterans in this region and it is becoming obvious that current and future conflicts will result in more vets in need of care. The VA inpatient beds are currently fully utilized. I’m part of a local group of veterans fighting to maintain the current VA facility. If you’re interested in helping fight this battle for our veterans give me a call or send me an email (see below for my telephone number and email address).

Recently state funds previously used to pay for the city leaf pickup were cut off by the State of Indiana. Solid waste costs have also climbed faster than expected. For that reason the Mayor and City Council found it necessary to increase the monthly solid waste fee by $1.75. Compared to other similar cities in the Midwest we’re still getting a lot for our current monthly fee.

Recently I received a call from a resident of Premier Drive regarding his property tax assessment. He had done some excellent research on the net and discovered that assessments in his neighborhood were very inconsistent. If you have any similar questions regarding reassessment call or visit the Allen County Assessor’s office and they should be able to answer your questions or to assist you in filing an appeal if you wish to do so.

“Toxaway Day”, when you can drop off oil based paints, lawn and garden chemicals, insecticides, old motor oil, etc. is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2004. Take those toxic household substances to the old IH site at: 2911 Meyer Road on that day for safe disposal. There is a $5-10 fee depending on how many containers you drop off.

Finally, don’t forget the 2nd annual Waynedale Picnic at Waynedale Park on Saturday, August 28th! This event is great for parents and kids alike and is free courtesy of many volunteers and donors including businesses and individuals! See you there!
