CANTERBURY OFFERS EDUCATION SUPPLIES TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
* Headmaster Jonathan Hancock has submitted Canterbury to the National Association of Independent Schools as a host school for displaced private school students, with three openings in each of grades 7, 9, 11 and 12.
* The school took part in a unique division-wide event the week of September 12, 2005.
Canterbury collected items for delivery to Baton Rouge, where many New Orleans residents have sought shelter. There, the conductor of the Baton Rouge Symphony (an acquaintance of Canterbury strings instructor Mrs. Lenelle Morse and others in his neighborhood will oversee distribution to families and small shelters in the area. A Canterbury grandparent, Mr. Hill volunteered to drive a truck to Louisiana to deliver the supplies. Lower School students collected new baby and children’s items; Middle School students brought in adult hygiene items; and High School students donated new, packaged undergarments and socks. Early Childhood families also brought an array of goods.
* The Middle School, led by Mrs. Michelle Lengerich and her advisory group, collected baby items for two weeks for radio station WMEE’s Diaper Drive.
* Krispy Kreme provided doughnuts to the High School at a discounted rate. The High School sold the doughnuts to students for $1 each on Thursday, September 8; proceeds of approximately $250 were included in Canterbury’s cash donation to the American Red Cross.
* The Lower, Middle and High schools sponsored a casual-dress day. Students dressed casually in return for a donation to Canterbury’s collection. The High School gathered a whopping $1,800, plus surprise gifts of $100, another $100 and $2,000 by anonymous individuals. The Middle School totaled around $550, and the Lower School brought in $700, far exceeding suggested donations!
* During Homecoming, the High School athletics department sold some “retro” athletics clothing, with all proceeds donated to the American Red Cross.
They have recently learned that the Fort Wayne Community Foundation has generously agreed to match all of Canterbury’s cash donations to the American Red Cross. Canterbury is grateful to all who have taken part in this effort!
