Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As you’ve probably read, recent state law makes it possible for various units of government to combine, if elected officials and the public agree. This includes city and county governments, school systems, townships, etc. City Council is currently considering a possible merger between the City of Fort Wayne and county government. IF this happens it will happen only after lots of discussion, public hearings, etc. I’ve said for several years that I favor a restructuring of some type to increase government efficiency and save tax dollars which I believe can and will happen. There are many options as to how this might occur. Discussion is now underway. Let me know if you have any opinions regarding local government reform.

Current gas prices are terrible and could get worse. It’s getting harder and harder for many of us to afford the gas just to get to work. Our national government obviously needs to have a coordinated energy plan but it doesn’t look like that will happen soon. We’re all aware of lots of ways to conserve gasoline including driving cars that get good gas mileage. I believe this is a good time to take another look at Fort Wayne’s bus system—Citilink—as a means of getting around town. Especially when it comes to regular travel, such as travel from home to job or home to grocery store—-Citilink is a viable option that deserves consideration. If the bus isn’t convenient for you and your neighbors to ride, write Citilink at 801 Leesburg Ave. (46808) or send an email to www.fwcitilink.com with a copy to me at the email address below and ask for a new or altered bus route. If there is good evidence that a route change will result in more riders on the system that change may well be made. I’ll be happy to help out with this process.

As you know all too well by the sprouting of campaign signs around the city, it’s an election year. An excellent public event was recently held in the Waynedale area. The Belle Vista-Allendale Association sponsored a candidate forum which was attended by many candidates including yours truly. Congratulations to all of the members of that association and to Belle Vista Billie Rykard, Belle Vista President for hosting an important event.

Give me a call with any thoughts as to how we can make Fort Wayne a better city!
