THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
1948- RED MEN ON THE WARPATH
It was 1948, the season started on April 18 and 115 sports writers voted the Yankees and Cardinals would finish in first place. History was not too kind on either team that year as the “red men” went on the warpath.
I was born and raised a Cleveland Indian Fan and 1948 was my most interesting and pleasing season.
Cleveland’s players had to beat the Red Sox in a single game playoff by at least 8-3 to win the American League Championship. Gene Bearden went all the way for the win.
The Boston braves finished 91-62, 6 ½ games ahead of the Cardinals. The Braves started slow and didn’t move up to first place until June 14, tied with the Giants at 27-21.
Cleveland started well, but on May 31 was in second place behind Philadelphia. The Boston Red Sox were 13-22, 11 ½ games behind. The Red Sox came on strong but on August 22, Cleveland was still behind Philadelphia. At the end of the season, Cleveland and Boston were tied 96-59, causing the one-game playoff. Philadelphia finished fourth, 11 ½ games behind.
The All-Star game was played in St. Louis and the AL won 5-2.
Cleveland beats the Braves 4-2 in the World Series.
That season was thrill after thrill and could possibly be considered baseball’s greatest season. That’s the way I saw it, anyway.
