VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
The busy Christmas season is upon us. As I scurry around getting ready for Christmas, I always remember the great blessing of giving to others, especially those with limited resources who might need some extra Christmas cheer.
One of the things we do at Wayne Township to make Christmas special for others is our payee Christmas party. The party is for our payee clients and will be on December 14 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Callie Jones from our accounting department coordinates this wonderful event.
Wayne Township currently serves as the representative payee for 117 recipients of Social Security Disability. These clients need Wayne Township’s help because they have trouble managing their finances on their own.
Wayne Township is one of only a few townships in the state which provides this service for Social Security Disability recipients. The payee program is free for clients who want to participate. The representative payee program is administered by Ralph Charlton and James Graham and supervised by Rodney Scott.
As a representative payee, our job is to make sure the client’s funds are used first to meet the client’s basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing and medical and dental care. Often the client has little money left for recreation, entertainment or to celebrate holidays.
At the payee Christmas party, the clients will be treated to a tasty lunch of turkey or ham, side dishes and dessert. They will be entertained with live music.
We also give each client a gift and hope to give them some money so they can buy something for themselves.
We are able to have this party with the help of generous donations of gifts, food and money from the community, including our own staff. For example, we are grateful to Waynedale Bakery for donating a sheet cake for the party.
Among the gifts Ms. Jones has obtained thus far for clients are candy, bath sets, cookie tins, popcorn tins, mugs, winter hats and gloves, socks, manicure sets and toys for children. If you are interested in donating to the party, please contact Callie Jones by December 7 at 449-7000. We would appreciate anything you can donate.
I want to remind you that our office is now a distribution site for the Community Harvest Food Bank Farm Wagon. The Farm Wagon arrives at our office, 320 East Superior Street, on Mondays around 9 a.m. and brings a variety of food products available to anyone who needs them.
This is another way we have been trying to help those in need at the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office. I hope you are enjoying your holiday season.
