SHORTAGE OF WOOD FOR BASEBALL BATS?

The Baseball Commissioner has announced his next investigation will be the quality of baseball bats.

It is no doubt true that bats are shattering a great deal more than years ago. I remember bats cracked and they were taped with friction tape and we kept on using them.

The shattering of a baseball bat can be very dangerous for a player. I remember several years ago when the Chicago Cubs outfielder Hank Sauer’s bat shattered, a small piece lodge in his neck. He was lucky it didn’t lodge in an area where it could have caused considerable damage.

In the past most bats were made of ash with some hickory. In 1972 the colleges outlawed wooden bats for aluminum and high schools followed. It appears that many bats are now made of red maple which indicates a shortage of ash wood. I remember visiting Henry Clay’s home in Lexington, Kentucky and the guide stated that his estate Ashland had very few ash trees.

We will see what happens.

That’s the way I saw it.
