CIVIL WAR SCHOLAR AT McMURTRY LECTURE

Dr. Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, will be the annual keynote speaker at the 2014 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture. This year’s lecture will be held in the Lower Level Theater of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza, on Friday, September 26 at 7PM. Foner’s lecture is entitled “The Emancipation of Abraham Lincoln”.

Dr. Foner earned a PhD from Columbia University. He is the author of several books, including Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War (1970); Tom Paine and Revolutionary America (1976); Nothing But Freedom; Emancipation and Its Legacy (1983); Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877 (1988);and The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery (2010).

Professor Foner’s publications have concentrated on the intellectual, political, and social history of American race relations. He is one of just a few historians to have won the Bancroft and Pulitzer Prizes in the same year. His books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Foner is also a winner of the Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates and the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University.

Dr. Foner will also attend other events that afternoon including a dinner with supporters and board members of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana. He will then present the McMurtry Lecture at 7PM in the Theater.

The annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture is presented by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Friends of the Allen County Public Library. This year’s sponsors of the lecture are the Lupke Foundation, Parkview Health and Steel Dynamics. Admission into the lecture is free, and a post lecture reception will be held at the library.
