DEFENDING THE UNION ON MEMORIAL DAY
Camping out in Lindenwood Cemetery over the Memorial Day holiday were the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and the 44th Indiana Civil War Historical Association demonstrating the life of a soldier and civilian during the 1860s. The public was invited to ask questions and take in the encampment and living history from 8am to sunset Saturday and Sunday.
The portrayal in the life of a Civil War soldier included military camp life, military drills through artillery drills and firing, bayonet exercises, skirmish drills, camp and rifle inspections of their model 1853 Enfield rifles, muster pay and, dinner and mail calls. Period cooking, dress, naval demonstrations, medical treatments, spinning wool, making children’s toys was also included in the weekend campout celebrating history during Civil War times.
