ORGANIZATION DAY AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY – Straight From The Senate

On Tuesday, November 17, the Indiana General Assembly will convene at the Statehouse for the ceremonial start of the 2016 legislative session. “Organization Day,” as it’s commonly referred to, provides legislators an opportunity to meet with fellow lawmakers and staff, and begin discussing legislative topics.

The 2016 session will reconvene in January and by law, must end no later than March 14. Lawmakers will be working together to address several key issues, including:
·Supporting Indiana students, teachers and schools;
·Infrastructure and road funding needs; and
·Combating illegal drugs in our state.

As President Pro Tempore of the Indiana Senate, I am confident that members of the Senate will hold spirited, but respectful debates on these issues and many more in the upcoming session.

To help Hoosiers stay informed and engaged as we consider new laws, committee hearings and session meetings can be viewed online by visiting www.in.gov/legislative. Event calendars, meeting agendas, vote tallies and proposed legislation can also be found on this site.

The Senate page program is an opportunity for students who want to be involved in the legislative process during session. Senate pages tour the Statehouse, listen to debates and assist senators and staff.

This program is open to students in grades six through 12. During the legislative session, pages are scheduled to serve at the Statehouse on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Groups of pages serve on Wednesdays. The application window for the page program opens in December. For more information, please visit www.indianasenaterepublicans.com/page-program
