ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PUBLISH BOOK

Kindergarten A Z bookStudents in Ms. Winebrenner’s kindergarten class at Waynedale Elementary recently published a book titled “Kindergarten A to Z” with the help from their Study Connection tutor, Angela Hudson of Studio A Design. This book was written for in-coming kindergartners about things they might want to know about kindergarten. The students were the authors and illustrators of the book. Their tutor, who is a designer by profession, simply laid the book out for them and provided the cover art. The books were purchased by the ACPL and will be available for check-out at each of the 14 local branches, including the Waynedale Elementary library. Due to the tremendous response, the books may be available for purchase through the Study Connection office.

The children used a lot of different skills for this project. They set a goal—to create a book. They broke down the process into different parts, so it was easy to understand and do.

First, the students brainstormed different words for each letter of the alphabet to be included. Then they discussed whether those words would be relevant to incoming kindergarteners and learning about kindergarten. Once their letter and their words were selected, the students had to write a complete sentence to describe their word and how it related to kindergarten. They then completed two drawings, one from their imagination and one from looking at a picture. They did a practice and then an official illustration. A few children did more than one page in order to complete the 26-letter book.

To celebrate, on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, the students attended a field trip to the downtown ACPL. They were first given a behind the scenes tour of the library and received information on the summer reading program. The event concluded with an Author Party celebration in the Globe Room where each child received a certificate of accomplishment and a copy of their book donated by Studio A Design.

Study Connection is a program through Fort Wayne Community Schools that matches community volunteers with students needing academic assistance for tutoring.

Congratulations to Ms. Winebrenner’s 2014-2015 Kindergarten class!
