WOW! WHAT A NIGHT!
It was another night of great speeches at our Baerfield Toastmasters’ Club. We had had a speech on the dangers of diet colas and one on the benefits of mentoring. To top it off, our newest member gave his Ice-breaker speech introducing himself to our club.
If this doesn’t sound very interesting, let me explain a little further:
First, most of the people there drink at least one or more diet drinks a day and one of these people is a problematic diabetic. After hearing the facts presented both verbally and pictorially, we all had some major thinking to do regarding our pop consumption!
Then, our second speaker spoke on the benefits of mentoring—both to the mentor and mentee. He explained that the mentee gained knowledge from hearing what his mentor had learned and experienced, but the mentor gained from watching his protégé grow and helping his mentee face the new challenges of learning to become a better speaker. Also, knowing that no two people are the same, often the mentee ends up teaching the mentor some things, too.
Lastly, our new member gave his speech introducing himself by telling us a little about himself and why he wanted to become a Toastmaster. It seems he does computer technology for a large company in Fort Wayne; but as part of that work, he has to give training talks and presentations on the various jobs he does. His boss suggested that he join a Toastmaster club to help him learn to feel more comfortable when speaking and to learn more about organizing and presenting his speeches.
So you think you don’t need Toastmasters. You don’t have to give speeches in your job. Are you planning on moving up in your work? Do you suppose you will have to give presentations as you move up? We have a couple of higher managers in our club who would tell you how they have benefited from our group.
Plus, remember we also have a leadership side. This is a huge help for anyone considering management roles in their work stations. We have found it even helps us in leadership in various clubs we belong to or—even in our homes!
Any time we can improve our communication abilities, we gain all the way around. So—give us a try and see what Toastmasters can do for you.
Baerfield Toastmasters meets the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tuesdays of the month. Also, the 5th Tuesday if there is one. We meet at Penguin Point on Tillman Road.
