APPLESEED QUILTER’S GUILD’S DOG BEDS TO BENEFIT THE ALLEN COUNTY SPCA – Around The Frame

ATF-shelter-dog-bedOctober is “Adopt a Shelter Dog” month and Born Again Quilts is full of dog beds.

Members of the non-profit Appleseed Quilters Guild, (AQG) have created dog beds out of recycled fabrics and are asking people to “name their own price”–just like Flo from the insurance commercials and take them home. In this case however it is the Allen County SPCA benefits because all of the funds will be donated to them. So from recycled fabric comes the funds to assist the dogs transition from “shelter dog” to “forever home.” As ACSPCA Director Jessica Henry aptly puts it, “We’re so touched by this incentive from the Appleseed Quilters. What a great way to reduce, reuse, recycle and  - now – rescue!”

Here’s the rest of the story by AQG member Marcia Neeley:
“Beth Rajcany and I as co-chairs of the Philanthropy Committee at Appleseed Quilter’s Guild started the Touch Quilt initiative that was reported in The Waynedale News last March. We use all sorts of fabric and trims to make small quilts for use as tactile stimulation for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. That project was so well received by the Guild that we started thinking of other ways to give. We definitely wanted to include ALL members in some way.

I have always owned rescue dogs so immediately I thought of doing something to aid this type of group. The guild received a large donation of upholstery fabric that was not appropriate for the touch quilts, so we decided to use it to make dog pillows and stuff them with fabric and batting scraps! The guild members were asked to bring in their scraps, no matter how small, and we have received several bags at each meeting ever since. The Guild meets once a month and so we can make some new beds each month. We have donated dog beds to the SPCA, Animal Care and Control and to Perfect Paws Rescue. Perfect Paws even sent a representative to a meeting to pick up the beds and speak to our group about their work. They had information to share and got a new foster family in return. Appleseed is a very pet friendly group and the members enthusiastically continue to donate scraps and fabric to this cause. It all started with the generosity of those who donated fabric to the Guild and grew with the caring spirit and dedication of those who use some of their time and sewing talents to give back to the community in a small way.”

So come down to Born Again Quilts (info below) and check out the selection of beds for small and medium size dogs and drop the dead president(s) of your choice in the donation box. Christmas will be here soon and what better present to your “Woofer” than one benefiting the ACSPCA as they continue to spring dogs in record-breaking numbers. Remember: It is OK to get the bed first and then visit the SPCA and find a friend just the right size for it!

If you wish to donate fabric, drop it by BAQ and it will get to the AQG. Interested in getting involved with the Appleseed Quilters? Go to the website at: www.appleseedquiltersguild.com or E-mail them at appleseedquilters@yahoo.com
