ASK THE EXPERT ORTHODONTICS…WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT

We all want what is best for our children. To provide them with the advantages we didn’t have is every parent’s dream. Achieving the dream can be difficult and even a little overwhelming. There are so many things to think about when considering orthodontic treatment: time constraints, budget concerns and who to trust to give your child a healthy, happy and confident smile.

If you’ve been hiding your smile because you have crooked teeth or gaps between them, it’s time to see an orthodontist. You will be surprised at how today’s techniques can straighten that smile! And if you are apprehensive about traditional braces, clear brackets or Invisalign may be your preferred treatment option.

ORTHODONTICS CAN BE AN INTEGRAL PART TO THIS PUZZLE.

In some respects, getting braces has become a right of passage. For children (and adults) who need braces, it can make a tremendous difference in their outlook on life, especially for a person who does not feel good about his or her smile.

Orthodontics can be that life-changing experience!

A beautiful smile promotes confidence while helping to build self-esteem.

We love what we do at Bussick Orthodontics! We want everyone to experience the satisfaction and fulfillment that comes with having a great smile and the confidence to show the world.

Nothing warms a room, a relationship or changes attitudes like a great smile!

The good news is that getting braces has become so comfortable, convenient and affordable. Virtually everyone can now afford to give the wonderful gift of a great smile to their children or themselves! The days of having to see the orthodontist every month, painful bands and separators, headgear and high down payments are a thing of the past. Up-to-date technology, convenience and financing make braces more attractive and more affordable than ever before.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE MY CHILD TO THE ORTHODONTIST?

This is the most common question. In the past, parents were told to wait until all the baby teeth were gone, and then wait until their dentist referred them to an orthodontist.

Today, it is a whole different ballgame.

Advances in technology have made it possible to identity and address problems before they turn into a “train wreck” and require the removal of adult teeth and/or surgery.

If your child sees an orthodontist at around age 7 (or at least before the age of 10) the options available for optimum treatment are greatly increased.

However, if a parent suspects a problem, the child may be checked earlier. By age seven, unusual jaw growth problems become evident and harmful habits such as thumb sucking, lip biting, mouth breathing or tongue thrusting can be stopped.

For the vast majority of cases, no treatment is necessary on young children. Your orthodontist would be able to monitor their growth and development and then intercede at exactly the right time. Sometimes having an orthodontist monitor your child from an early age and addressing minor issues can help avoid the need for braces all together.

A general dentist’s referral is not necessary to see an orthodontist.

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an orthodontic screening by age 7. Do yourself and your child a favor and set up an initial exam. Many times the initial appointment is free and includes x-rays, photos and study models.
