SPRING GREEN – AROUND THE FRAME

It would be so wonderful if by the time you read this all the snow has disappeared and tiny bits of green life is beginning to show. Let’s face it. We live in the Hoosier state where the weatherman can’t give a temperature without adding a wind chill or humidity factor behind it. So even though we can’t predict when it will happen we know for certain our world will soon be painted green… and our rivers too as the FWFD hoses them green for the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations where everyone Irish or not will be decked out in green. Why green? Legend has it that St. Patrick used the green three-leaved shamrock to teach the concept of the Holy Trinity. The shamrock has three distinctive leaves all attached to one stem: Three distinct separate parts yet one shamrock.

When you think of the word green you most likely think of the color comprised of blue and yellow, but the word green not only describes the color that signifies growth, fertility and rebirth, it can be used in other connotations. Son Robert was recently a green Marine recruit. When he was in high school he thought I was his mobile ATM asking me for “green”. If I had extra cash I would most likely be “green” with his request and if I gave him more than he requested his friends may be green. The ecology/environment movement has us “going green” “thinking green”, “giving green a chance”, and “paying us to go green”.

Now while we wait for Mother Nature to turn our world green, there are lots of quilting events to enjoy. International Quilting Day, March 15 is the Gathering of Quilters at Wayne High School. Born Again Quilts is staying open until 6 p.m. that day so you can drop by and enjoy 15% off of one item priced at $20 or more. Last but certainly not least is the biennial String-A-Long Quilt Guild Show in Valparaiso, March 29-30. This year marks the Guild’s 30th anniversary and their theme “30 Years and Still in the Making”. This will be my third trip up to see my cousin Janet and take in the show that features a merchant mall, flea market (great fabric finds!), silent auction, quilt raffle a AQS certified quilt and textile appraiser, homemade food and a grand display of quilts. The times are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. CST Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. CST on Sunday. The fact they are an hour behind us makes the trip up more leisurely. Check out all the details at www.stringalongqg.org.

So whatever weather is yet to come this March, just remember in another three months we will be grousing about the heat index and humidity!
