Since living and working on a farm all their lives, Ron & Marj Franz enjoyed growing things, be it corn in a field or pigs in a pen. One thing they really loved was working in the garden and flower beds. Growing a tasty tomato, or a prize winning flower was always a thrill, so naturally the next step was to spread this love of plants to their neighbors. What a better way than to start a flower shop! In 1995, Ron & Marj bought a feed elevator in Decatur’s downtown, hence the name ‘The Grainery’. They put up some small greenhouses, which over the years grew to a permanent greenhouse with a gift & flower shop. The store is known for their high quality plants, beautiful sympathy gifts, seasonal home décor, fun kitchen accessories, and the stylish women’s boutique. What do they owe their success to? “None of this would be possible without our excellent staff and loyal customers,” says Ron. “We put together a great working and friendly shopping environment.” Their most recent addition is the florist service, which is headed by lead designer Rita Carroll. Rita has over 40 years in the florist business, and is great at making custom designs for each customer.
One thing the Grainery specializes in is Christmas. A winter wonderland in Decatur, the greenhouse is filled with festive decor and spectacular decorated trees. Marj recommends seeing it at night during the Open House or Sneak Peek. The store lights are turned off, leaving the store to be lit by Christmas lights. “There is nothing like it around with the Christmas trees lighting your way.”
