CENTENARIAN WILL CELEBRATE 101ST BIRTHDAY!
Rachael Manges is celebrating her 101st birthday on August 23. She is a resident of Fort Wayne, where she lives at Coventry Meadows, but she spent most of her life in Garrett, Indiana.
She loves quilting and crocheting, but insists her sister could crochet better. She was a stay-at-home mother because, “we had too many kids for me to work,” she said. Mrs. Manges was a longtime active member at the Church of Christ in Garrett.
She grew up in Montgomery County where she went to school in a horse-drawn carriage. It was at Bowers High School where she met her husband, Cline Manges, who was her history teacher. She hated history, she said, but fell in love with the man teaching it. They were married on December 29, 1934. The couple had eight children.
Mrs. Manges became a widow in 1972 and now lives at Coventry Meadows, a retirement community operated by American Senior Communities. In addition to her children, she has numerous grand, great and great-great grandchildren.
