EVANS SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO 10 INDIANA STUDENT CADDIES
Ten students from Indiana have been awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship, for this fall.
Evans Scholars are golf caddies who were selected based on four criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.
The students will attend Indiana University in Bloomington or Purdue University in West Lafayette, where they will live in the Evans Scholarship House. The Evans Scholarship, renewable for up to four years, is valued at an estimated $70,000.
The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Golf, Illinois, has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. It is among the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship programs.
In Indiana, the Indiana Golf Association co-sponsors the program with the WGA. Recipients were chosen after individual candidate interviews.
“These young men and women have excelled in academics and in service to their schools and communities,” said John Kaczkowski, president and CEO of the WGA. “We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family and look forward to their continued success as college students.”
“The Evans Scholarship is truly a life-changing opportunity for the deserving young men and women who will now be able to realize their dream of earning a college education,” said Johnston Erwin, WGA’s lead director in the state of Indiana.
Currently, 860 caddies are enrolled in colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars, including 55 at Indiana University and 48 at Purdue University. More than 9,000 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars – including 530 from Indiana and 390 from Purdue – since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr.
Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by more than 100,000 golfers across the country. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $4 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA TOUR Playoff events in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup competition, are donated to Evans Scholars.
Listed are the Chick Evans Scholarship recipients from the Fort Wayne area in order of name, hometown, sponsoring golf or country club, high school and college (either Purdue or Indiana University) to attend.
