WALKING FOR FITNESS AT 77
On Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 1819 Reservation Drive, welcomes those who want to walk for fitness.
Most of those who walk for fitness are senior citizens, even into their 80’s. There are eight walkers who have turned 77 years of age this year. They include Harriet Stennfeld, Betty Rekeweg, Dorcas Recks, Nilah Wellman, Bill Gotschall, Marvin Conrad, Louie Dasher, and Rich Rekeweg.
Some of these walkers log a good 5-6 miles, but “it’s not a competition. Each person determines his or her own pace and endurance,” says Harriet Stennfeld, loyal fitness walker. “We also find a partner(s) to walk with which makes for a more enjoyable fellowship as we walk around and around.”
Sixteen times around the gym marks a mile.
At 8am there is a time for prayer and devotion, with intercession for concerns for family and friends close to the walker’s hearts. The parish nurse, Betty Rekeweg, takes and reads each walker’s blood pressure.
Not only do the Mount Calvary Walkers walk around and around at their gym you may have also noticed them walking during the Waynedale Memorial Day parade. They donned matching patriotic shirts.
