WAYNEDALE OUTDOORS Q & A

(A column, whereas, you the reader may ask Ben questions about camping, cooking, hunting, fishing, or anything concerning living in our Great Outdoors.)

Q – Which is better to use when cooking; propane or white gas (Coleman fuel)?
A – I think it’s a personal matter of taste (no pun intended). I have found that propane is safer and easier for Boy Scouts to use than liquid fuel. It won’t spill or leak out onto your clothes or food. It’s easier to change out an empty cylinder than re-fill a tank with liquid fuel. I recommend the use of propane lanterns over liquid fuel lanterns also.

Q – Which is cheaper; propane or liquid fuel?
A – I have never checked the use time wise or cost wise; I’m more interested in safety and ease of handling but I do wait until the 14-oz propane cylinders are on sale for around $1.50 – $2.00 each and then I buy a lot of them. I have found that they go for $4.00 to almost $6.00 in camping stores near campgrounds or even local hardware stores.
(Note: I recommend cooking over charcoal and wood fires whenever possible to teach Scouts as well as adults, how to build fires (without matches) to test their survival skills.

Q – Why should I go camping?
A – If you have to have an answer to that question then you should stay home and play with your cell phone. Same answer as to why should you go fishing, hunting, birding, hiking, canoeing, rafting, tubing, climbing, sightseeing, or to the library. As my mom would have said, “It’s good fer ya.”

Q – What is the best thing I can I do to help the wildlife of Indiana?
A – Buy a hunting/fishing license; then find out how that money is being used.

We suggest that everyone get a copy of Indiana’s hunting and fishing regulations from most any place that sells hunting/fishing license for more detailed rules and regulations. Please e-mail all questions reguarding Waynedale outdoors to: News@waynedalenews.com.
