SCOUTING AROUND

Happy Birthday
Boy Scouts of America

The BSA turns 100 years old next month and there are celebrations galore planned all over this land. I won’t go into their history but you can bet they have helped make history and have been a big asset to this country in times of war, in times of disasters, in times of peace, and in every day living by what they have accomplished in the many Eagle service projects they’ve done throughout the area.

In our own metropolis of Waynedale, Indiana the Boy Scouts have helped build trails and bird houses at Fox Island, cleaned up some of the ponds in the area, built wood duck boxes, refurbished local flag poles and helped clean up some ‘pocket parks’ to help some of the area associations, organized blood drives, picked up trash along Winchester Road and the Baer Field Thruway, built trails and fireplaces in the county parks, helped collect items to hold garage sales and then donated money to a local church as well as collect many hundreds of pounds of food for the Harvest Food Bank. And what did the Boy Scouts gain from their efforts? They gained recognition as being the #1 Youth organization in the area in my book and they’ve earned my respect in no small way. And they’ve not taken a penny for their efforts.

They live by the Scout Law, which states: “A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.”

And they also pledge: “On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my country; to obey the Scout Law, and to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically fit, mentally awake, and morally straight.

How many other youth organizations can make and keep this law and pledge?

There are several Scouting groups in the immediate Waynedale area and they are always looking for boys as well as adults to join. Everyone is welcome to join the Boy Scouts of America. Yes, even girls. The Venturing Crews are co-ed and mothers are welcome to join as adult leaders also. To locate a Pack, Troop, or Venture Crew near you, call the Council Office at: 260-432-9593.
