HINES CELEBRATES 100

Ralph Hines celebrated his 100 birthday on August 30, 2008. He was born in Whitley County, Jefferson Township and raised on a farm north of Roanoke. Hines married Ruth Kaough in 1948 and has been a lifetime member of St. Joe Catholic Church. Ralph’s hobbies include yard work and going to auctions. He lives with his wife of 60 years at Concord Village at Lutheran Homes on South Anthony Blvd.

Ralph worked at Waynedale Lumber Company for thirty years and retired in 1965. He is a WWII veteran and served in the 82nd paratroopers and glider group. He was decorated with the Bronze Star for heroic conduct in action against enemy on September 20, 1944 at Beek Holland; the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds to his hand on September 17 and October 8. He has the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to the 82nd for its job as the first ones into Normandy; the Good Conduct ribbon; and European Theater of Operations with four bronze campaign stars signifying participation in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, Normandy and the Tunisian campaign.

Hines landed in France on June 5 ahead of the Normandy landing and fought through seven countries during his service in WWII.
