CANCER PHYSICIANS READY TO DEDICATE $7 MILLION FACILITY ON LUTHERAN CAMPUS

A state-of-the-art facility designed to provide healing and hope for patients and families who live with cancer is nearing completion. To recognize this important milestone in local healthcare, the physicians of Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology gathered to dedicate their Comprehensive Cancer Center at Lutheran Hospital on Friday, September 14, 2007. A ribbon cutting ceremony began at 5:15 p.m. This $7 million, 48,000-square-foot center is owned by Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology and was constructed in collaboration with the hospital. It is located on the south side of the campus and is attached to Medical Office Building Two.

Joining the physicians of Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology Friday were representatives from partner organizations who are leasing space in the two-story cancer center. Tenants of the facility include Lutheran Hospital, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Indiana Surgical Specialists. With physicians from Radiation Oncology Associates already located in MOB Two, the ability to bring a broad spectrum of cancer services to one location has now been achieved.

“We are gratified to know a vision shared by our physicians and the leadership team at Lutheran Hospital to bring comprehensive cancer care to this campus is now a reality,” said Steven Rhinehart, MD-Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology. “Aside from the excitement of officially dedicating this building, we are pleased to know patients are already benefiting from the resources it houses.”

A two-story glass atrium greets patients and guests as they enter the facility, which is designed to feature an ample amount of natural light. The center includes resources for treatment, research and support. There have been countless hours dedicated by project team members to address each element of total patient care.

Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology has offices and an imaging suite on the first floor. Five of the group’s 11 physicians now call the Comprehensive Cancer Center home.

“Development of this center is just the first step of an important and worthwhile journey to provide quality cancer care and expanded options for patients in this region,” said Praveen Kollipara, MD, Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology. “We believe the long-term impact on individual and community satisfaction will be substantial and positive.”

The Lutheran Cancer Resource Center, including a multi-disciplinary clinic, is also located on the ground level. The relocation of what was formerly called the Women’s Cancer Center at Lutheran Hospital to this new facility signals an exciting transition from an area primarily focused on offering support for women to one that focuses on offering support and education for both men and women.

The second floor consists of: finished and future space for pediatric oncology and hematology services offered through Lutheran Children’s Hospital; Lutheran’s adult chemotherapy clinic; physician offices for Indiana Surgical Specialists; offices for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; Lutheran’s Tobacco Intervention Program; The Convalescent Shop; and a conference room.

“The Comprehensive Cancer Center represents another example of our collaboration with physicians to improve patient care by bringing together under one roof the best the community has to offer,” said Joe Dorko, chief executive officer, Lutheran Hospital. “We appreciate the physicians’ vote of confidence in our abilities to partner with them to provide a world class healthcare experience.”

The general contractor for this project is Weigand Construction and the architects are from Hoch Associates. Work has taken approximately 17 months to complete.
