COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

On several occasions I’ve received calls and emails from residents of the Winterset area. That area has been hit by flooding in the past, and residents there are understandably concerned that plans to build a dike upstream on the east side of the St. Mary’s River may worsen flooding in the Winterset Addition. City flood engineers have told me on several occasions that they have studied the situation closely and they find no evidence that flood risk will be increased after the St. Mary’s dike project is completed. In the meantime I’ve asked Fort Wayne’s storm water engineering team to review this matter once again and to meet with residents of the Winterset area to discuss their findings.

Two very controversial matters have come before City Council recently. One is the proposed rezoning of the property at the southeast corner of the intersection of W. Jefferson Blvd. and South Bend Drive. That’s the area which was stripped of all trees several months ago. It finally looks like some type of development will occur at that site—exactly what remains to be seen. The other proposed project is located at the intersection of W. Jefferson Blvd. and Aboite Center Road. A medical office complex has been proposed which makes lots of sense. The current challenge is how to protect adjacent residential areas from heavy traffic and other problems likely associated with the development. I’m sure that a satisfactory answer will eventually be found for development at both of these sites.

There will be plenty of fireworks for the kids in the near future during the 4th of July holiday and also during the Three Rivers’ Festival. Those are great events to attend with the kids. I hope everyone will be careful with home fireworks during the days before and after the 4th. Also, don’t forget that the Fort Wayne Police Department has been asked to investigate any extremely loud home “fireworks” explosions to verify that only legal fireworks are being used.

Give me a call with your opinion and suggestions regarding any matters of importance to the citizens of Fort Wayne.
