BLAZERS’ FURIOUS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
As David Mills’ possible game-winning three-point shot from just inside the half-court line rimmed out at the end of last Saturday’s loss to the Cornerstone Warriors, a collective gasp of disappointment escaped from the Roanoke Blazers home crowd. After being down by seven points with 30 seconds left in the game, Roanoke scored on a lay up and then stole the inbound pass with 21 seconds to go. It seemed like the golden opportunity for victory until a silly turnover seemingly killed the Blazers chances for a win. However, the Warriors failed to score on their next trip down the floor and Roanoke received the ball with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. A mental error cost them valuable seconds bringing up the ball, but senior forward Michael DeRemer was still able to bring the Blazers within two by hitting a rainbow three-pointer with only 1.7 seconds left in the game. Blazer pressure on the inbound pass that followed resulted in a steal and long shot by David Mills that just missed giving Roanoke an incredible comeback victory. The real culprit was four missed free throws in the 4th quarter, which, considering the final score of 31-29, proved to be very costly.
The Blazers were able to bounce back the following Friday and take first place at the Blackford Baptist Invitational tournament, defeating the Three Rivers Chargers 59-47 behind 22 points from freshman guard Michael Croy, who took tournament and MVP honors. Roanoke then defeated the Blackford Knights 46-29 in the championship game to secure their second top three tournament finishes of the season. These games have brought the Roanoke Blazers record to 9-5 heading into this weekend, when the Blazers will be competing in the Beech Grove Invitational tournament near Indianapolis.
