THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

A Move in the Right Direction

One of the things that I am most proud of about Township Government, is the fact that the cost of services provided by our office are returned in part to those citizens of Wayne Township by the requirements we place on those receiving assistance.

The Wayne Township Trustee’s Employment Department helps our unemployed clients find jobs that will enable them to become self-sufficient. The Employment Department finds job opportunities for our clients through newspaper advertisements, the Internet and by contacting perspective employers. Developing relationships with employers can help clients find employment now and in the future.

It is mandatory for most of our clients who do not work full time to actively participate in the job search. The law indicates that township trustees are not obligated to provide assistance until they are satisfied that the applicant is endeavoring to seek and accept employment. The clients may be exempt from seeking employment because of their age, because they are physically unable to work, or have children under the age of two. They are also exempt if they must care for someone else who is unable to care for themselves because of their age or physical condition.

Our Investigators review the employment and personal situations and if applicable, refer the client to our Employment Department. The employment staff matches client’s skills with the needs of local employers. The client is then contacted by mail, or sometimes by phone, to refer them to potential employers with job opportunities. This is an advantage to the employers who want to pre-screen their applicants to ensure the job qualifications are met.

The clients must complete the employer’s application for the job opening and return the referral to the Employment Department within 3 days. If the client does not seek employment within 3 days after being referred to an employer, they may be denied future assistance for up to sixty days.

Each month the employment staff sends a follow up letter to each employer where a client was referred. The employer then returns the letter to the Employment Department verifying the client’s application and suitability for the position.

I recall a memorable quote by a pastor about those in his congregation that were struggling to gain strength in their faith: “we need more people to do the carrying, and less to be carried. For each person we can have help in our mission, the easier that it will be for the rest of us.” This simple principle could certainly be applied to easing the tax burden for all of us by helping those in need find gainful employment; one more citizen to help pay the local taxes and one less in need of them.
