MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD

Residents in Waynedale and beyond will have the rare opportunity to craft the creation of a communitywide vision for the future. Beginning on May 5, the Allen County Fort Wayne Comprehensive Plan Committee will host 11 Community Meetings open to anyone interested in the planning process. The meeting time/place nearest Waynedale is Thursday, May 6, at South Side High School, at 7:00 p.m. If you miss that meeting, you can still attend any of the other meetings scheduled throughout the county. The complete list is available on our website, www.cityoffortwayne.org.

Why is there so much focus on this comprehensive plan? Because it is a land-use and development plan, it will lay out the “vision” for future growth and development in our community. This plan will use maps and surveys, population studies, studies of the community’s economic base, housing analyses, natural resource studies and community surveys to set forth policies for future development for the entire community.

I want to be clear that this comprehensive plan is NOT a plan for Government Consolidation, nor is it a program plan, financial plan or business plan. Indiana State law says that the primary goal of a Comprehensive Plan is the “promotion of public health, safety, morals, convenience, order, or the general welfare and for the sake of efficiency and economy in the process of development” [Indiana Code 36-7-4-501]. A typical Comprehensive Plan attempts to predict or forecast community needs, and set a community vision for the next 20 years into the future. Comprehensive Plans should be reviewed and updated every five years.

This plan is a key component in our efforts to make Fort Wayne a better city by doing the basics well. Whether it is in an urban, suburban or rural setting, developers and entrepreneurs who want to start or grow a business in our community want to know that the infrastructure is sound and in place. This comprehensive plan will help us manage the growth needed to create jobs while maintaining the atmosphere of our neighborhoods.
