LETTERS

Dear Cindy,

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the people and businesses that made our Jump Rope for Heart event at Maplewood Elementary so special this year. Because of your generosity we were able to donate $2138 to the American Heart Association, a new Maplewood record!

Thanks to our third year corporate sponsors, Pizza Hut, Arby’s and Azar’s for your continued support. These Waynedale restaurants have provided us with pizza parties and many certificates to use as door prizes and awards for our students since my arrival at Maplewood. Thanks to first year sponsor, Umber’s Ace Hardware, for using your advertising sign to support our charitable efforts as well as the classroom set of American flags you donated. Thanks also to The Waynedale News for your outstanding article highlighting our children’s efforts.

A very special thank you to retiring principal Steve Ecenbarger for allowing me the opportunity to teach students about giving and helping others within the confines of the physical education curriculum.

Most of all, thank you to the many, many, parents, friends, neighbors, Maplewood faculty and staff who contributed either their time or money to the AHA. Your gift will go far, not only in the fight against Heart Disease and Stroke, but also in helping our young people know that they can make a difference.

Statement from Attorney General Steve Carter on the passing of Sen. Bud Meeks

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Sen. Bud Meeks. Sen. Meeks served the people of Northeast Indiana honorably for many years. My thoughts and prayers will be with the Meeks family during this difficult time.”

Dear Mae Julian,

In the last issue of The Waynedale News, you told us what a Heterosexual is as well as a Homosexual, a Bisexual and a Transsexual. Is there a Monosexual?

Signed,

Dear Ms. Cornwell

Thank you for the delightful article you wrote concerning the Girl Scouts of Limberlost. Council’s first “Miss Spider” Tea. I really enjoyed the history elements included in your story.

Today’s girls face many challenges. Girl Scout programming is needed now more than ever. Thank you for helping us work towards our vision of serving 20,000 girls by the year 2020. I hope you will consider joining us for a “GS101.” We would be honored to have you as our guest!

Dear Editor,

The News-Sentinal said they were thinking of publishing a list of gun permit holders. Someone has got to be friggin’ kidding; right? Publishing a list of everyone that has a permit to carry a firearm would include the entire population of the United States of America according to the Constitution since the 2nd Amendment gives everyone the right to carry a firearm for protection and this document is their written permit.

Oh, oh, oh, they mean publish a list of just the ones that are charged $25 to register their names with the state of Indiana. That means I pay the state of Indiana $25 to let all the crooks/robbers/thieves around know that I have a little pink piece of paper that says I can shoot them if they attack me or my loved ones or break into my house?

Publishing a list like that may not be a bad idea. If the crooks use this list to find guns and they have to break into homes to get them, then by means of reasoning, a lot of them will be getting killed because some (^%*&(*)^% – this word may be misspelled) newspaper person is trying to sensationalize something private in order to sell their newspapers.

This could save a lot of taxpayer dollars in that we won’t have to clothe, house, and feed these felons, just bury them. Good idea . . .!

Ok News-Sentinel, put my name down in your newspaper along with a list of all the persons that don’t have gun permits so the crooks can compare this list with the names in the phone book. Let’s see whose homes these crooks pick to break into. They may be crooks but they wouldn’t be so stupid as to pick the ones with the gun permits or would they?

By the way, I won’t be buying The News Sentinel any more. I’m switching over to just buying The Journal Gazette (I used to read both). I’ve wanted to do this for a long time anyway. By the way, The Journal Gazette has a good Sunday Outdoor Page with articles on hunting, fishing, shooting, camping, canoeing, and other outdoor related subjects by Phil Bloom, one of the best outdoor writers in the area.

The idea of publishing the list may be a good one but then I’d have to go to the trouble of cleaning up the ‘stupid’ crooks’ messy, splattered all over the place, remains. So, maybe you shouldn’t publish it after all; it would save me a whole lot of work if you didn’t.

(NOTE: In good reasoning the author’s name has been held back by the Editor.)

Dear Editor,

(This was an E-mail from a cousin in South Carolina)

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them.

After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial (9),zero(0), the pound sign # and hang up for anyone.

Signed,

A Concerned Citizen
