QUESTION: What could be worse than being robbed with no means of protection (gun, knife, baseball bat, golf club, mace, axe handle, or a 2×4)?

ANSWER: Having a means of protection (gun, knife, baseball bat, golf club, mace, axe handle, or a 2×4) and not know how to use it/them.

A gun, knife, and etc. will not guarantee your safety. The mere presence of a weapon will only make you feel secure and safe. That is, it will only make you feel safe until you have to use it. This is when reality sets in. You don’t have the slightest idea of how to shoot a gun, swing a club, or thrust a sharp weapon to protect yourself do you?

Most people don’t have the knowledge of how to protect themselves. Why not get some books and practice in the privacy of your living room, basement, or garage? Still not sure of what to do? Call the police department or sheriff’s department and ASK. Ask someone who is knowledgeable in self-protection to teach you the basics. Practice swinging that baseball bat against a rug hanging over a clothesline in the back yard. Practice; practice; practice. A baseball player doesn’t just walk up to the home plate and hit a home run without first practicing how to hold the bat, how to swing the bat, and finding out what that bat feels like when it connects with an object.

The same goes for guns. Unless you are instructed in how to load, unload, hold, and fire a weapon safely, don’t do it. Someone besides the intruder could get hurt AND if you aren’t knowledgeable in how to protect yourself, the weapon could be taken from you and used against you. The burglar or mugger may not even have a weapon and use yours to his advantage.

I was reading a paper from down home way and ran across an article that said, “CONCEALED WEAPONS CLASS SCHEDULED – A concealed weapons class will be offered at the Ritchie County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday, March 13th, beginning at 6pm. Call 643-XXXX to register for the class.” Why not get a group of your friends together and ask the Allen County Sheriff’s Department if they will do the same for you. Hey, what’s the worst they can do, say, “No?” If they do refuse, then call the National Rifle Association or the Department of Natural Resources. I’m sure someone will step forward to help you out. Hey it would make the law enforcement teams’ jobs a lot easier. The more people we have out there on the streets that are armed and trained the safer we all will be.
