MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD
The residents of Fort Wayne recently showed their patriotism and love for our nation by welcoming home members of the Indiana National Guard’s First Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment. These soldiers, stationed at the Cook Road Armory in Fort Wayne, were deployed for about a year and spent ten months in the Middle East.
As the busses of soldiers traveled through Fort Wayne, they were joined by our City’s police and fire departments, as well as, carloads of proud families members anxious to be reunited with their loved ones. Thousands lined the streets, many displaying American flags, yellow ribbons and signs as they cheered on the members of the 293rd.
I was fortunate enough to be present when these men departed for their mission from Fort Knox, Kentucky, last December. At the time, I presented the battalion with a City of Fort Wayne flag as a symbol of support from our community. During the recent welcome home celebrations, that flag was returned to the City. The 293rd flew it over Iraq on Independence Day. I also was presented with a U.S. flag that flew that same day. I am honored to receive these special gifts on behalf of the residents of Fort Wayne. But even more, I am so proud of the 293rd soldiers for their work overseas and their commitment to protecting our country.
Among the soldiers who recently returned to Fort Wayne are five City employees. I would like to offer my congratulations and a warm welcome home to Rodney Bradtmueller, Matthew Crawford, Derrick DeMorest, Isaac Keller and Scott Pepper. They have just completed a great service to our nation and I look forward to their continued public service in our community.
