Suffer the little Children
I remember many lessons from my days of going to Sunday School class at the Waynedale Methodist Church. I wasn’t sure, though, whether my mom made us go to Bible School, for “our own good”, ‑(which seemed a cruel and unusual punishment, since we had just gotten out of school for the summer), or if it was just to get us out of the house for a week or two, however long it lasted, but I’m sure she felt she was fulfilling her duties as a mother. Well, looking back, I’m sure she was right. I learned a lot of things that come to my mind at odd moments. One was the other day when we had Lulu here. Now, as you know, from my repeated carrying-on about my grandchildren, that Lulu started Kindergarten this year. Of course, I figured that she would be at the head of the class. So brilliant, so beautiful, so precocious. Not only that, but she is a little pixie with platinum hair and blue eyes. (Now, don’t all of you roll your eyes at once!) Last week, Spike and I spent a week in Indiana, at Oliver Lake, settling up plans for our new lake house to be built. The tearing down will start in a couple of weeks, so the old lake house as we knew it, with pails all over to catch the rain, and the sagging roof, and the old windows with the sills cracking out, will soon be a thing of the past. So, I have missed being able to observe what Lulu was learing. ‑‑So, last night when we had her here, she began with her “presentation”. ‑She picked a book up, stepped up with her bare feet on the coffee table, and began her presentation, as if she were on a stage. ‑She held up the book and told us that it was very important to learn how to read. Her grandfather and I gave her our full attention from the couch. She proceeded to “read” the story to us. With each turning of the page, she turned the book and held it up for us to see. She carefully made sure that we both saw the pictures. After “reading” the whole book to us, she said importantly: ‑”It is important for you to know the parts of the book, as well”. She held up the front of the book and announced that this is the front book cover. She turned it over and presented it to us as the back cover. Then she opened it to the first page and told us that the title will always be “here” and she demonstrated. She also told us it is good to know the author, so you will know if you like the way the writing is done. When she finished her “stunning” presentation and was ready to jump off her perch on the table, she stopped herself, remembering one thing she forgot. “Oh !” “Also,” she exclaimed, as she turned the book sideways, “THIS is the spinal cord, and it’s important not to damage it or you’ll never walk again.”
Well, Spike and I about fell off the sofa laughing. She looked indignant and marched into the kitchen and got a popsicle from the freezer and took the book to read to her doll…someone who would truly appreciate her abilities!
“Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven”. ‑Amazing what you retain from Methodist Summer School.
Thanks, Mom!
