MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD
The arrival of autumn means many things, cooler weather, fall festivals and Halloween haunted houses, just to name a few. But the most prominent feature of this season is the changing of the leaves.
However, there is a price to pay for those beautiful fall colors: raking, bagging and collecting leaves. Fortunately, the City of Fort Wayne is here to help. The Street Department will run its leaf pick-up program through December 20.
Leaves will be collected in the Waynedale area the weeks of October 21-25, November 18-22 and December 9-13. There are a few simple rules for residents to remember this fall: leaves should be ready for pick-up on the first day of the area’s scheduled week and should be raked to the park strip area or placed in brown biodegradable bags and set at the curb. Leaves should not be raked into the street where they could block cars or drainage ditches.
To make fall cleanup even easier, the City has set up a Leaf Hotline providing locations of where crews will be picking up leaves each day. The number is 427-2302. That information is also available on the city’s website www.cityoffortwayne.org.
Leaf pick-up is a major project for Fort Wayne’s Street Department. Last year, crews hauled more than 4,000 truckloads of leaves. This is just another great service for our citizens and a way to keep neighborhoods beautiful.
