This is the third year that Project ‘E’ has given awards to 10 of Indiana’s finest teachers. Diana VanSlyke, former Elmhurst teacher, nominated Don. Dolly Bauman, ‘E’ Charter School Resource Manager traveled from Indianapolis last Friday, Oct 4th, to present Don with the prestigious award.
Don, who has lived in the same house in Waynedale since he was two years old, attended Waynedale Elementary School, (1st through 8th) and then Elmhurst High School (9th through 12th). He attended many different colleges, mostly IU, to receive his teaching degree. Don accepted the $10,000 award on behalf of the school, the kids, and his co-workers. $8,000 went to Don and $2,000 went to EHS.
Matthew Smith, mathematics teacher at Bishop Dwenger High School, and last years ‘E’ recipient, was at the presentation to pass on the award.
Amy Blough, Anna Townsend, and Kevin McClain, three of Don’s former students were at the award ceremony and each came forward to give an account as to what it was like learning in Don’s Art Class. Don not only teaches Art but also puts on stage productions. One of Don’s former students, David Turnley has gone on to win a Pulitzer Prize.
