TEAMSTER RETIREES’ MEETING

The Teamster Retirees’ Local 414 will hold their monthly meeting August 8, 2002 at 1pm at the Local 414 Union Hall.  There will be a pot luck and a guest speaker.

WOODBURN WATERBALL FESTIVAL

The Woodburn Volunteer Fire Department and Woodburn Community Association will present the 4th Annual Waterball Festival August 16 and 17th.

August 16th activities include: “Taste of Woodburn” food tent from 5pm to 9pm and BBQ Chicken Dinner served from 5pm to 7pm.  Magician Dick Stoner will entertain everyone from 5:45pm to 6:30pm.  The highlight of the evening will be the Benefit Auction with proceeds benefiting the fire station, and the Park Renovation Fund.  Featured items include Amish handcrafted lawn furniture and lawn decorations, gift certificates, ride-on toys and much, much more.

August 17th activities will kick off with the parade starting at 10am, and heading straight down Main Street.  Immediately following the parade there will be children activities in the park.  These activities include rides, clowns, moonwalk, etc.  The “Taste of Woodburn” food tent will open all day, beginning at 11am.  Waterball Tournament begins at 11am.

G.E. QUARTER CENTURY CLUB OUTING

The G.E. Quarter Century Club will have its 2002 Outing beginning at 9:30am on September 7, 2002 at the Memorial Coliseum – Hall #3.  Employees and retirees with 25 or more years of service are invited.  For those who did not get a ballot from G.E. News or one that was mailed on July 16, 2002, can still make a reservation.  Mail it to: Helen Miller, 934 N.2nd St., Decatur, IN 46733.  Check should be for $4.  Do not send cash (Nonrefundable).  Include name and address.  Deadline for reservations is August 23, 2002.  For more information, call Tom Ahr at 260-493-6151.

SUMMIT MEN’S CHOIR AT SIMPSON CHURCH

Thirty members of Summit Men’s Choir, directed by Robert Bowman, will sing several selections at the 9am service on August 4, 2002 at Simpson United Methodist Church, Calhoun St. at Suttenfield St.  Dr. Scott D. Shoaff will present “Institutionalizing the Faith”.  Education studies for all ages follow worship.

ALLEN COUNTY PARKS METEOR SHOWER WATCH

Who: Metea County Park What: Telescopic observing of meteors Where: 12621 Union Chapel Road, Leo, Indiana When: Saturday, August 10, from 9pm to midnight. Cost: Park admission is $2 for people 7 and older. NOTE: Every year in mid-August, earth is visited by the Perseid Meteor Shower, when more meteors than usual may be observed.  Come out to the clear skies of Metea County Park to see the meteors streak across the sky, along with telescopic observing of other celestial objects.  See and hold real meteorites that came from “out there.”  Bring lawn chairs or sleeping pads to lie on while you wait for the “shooting stars.”  Meet Education Director Bob Dispenza.  Call 449-3180 for more information.

FOOD FOR THE BODY AND SPIRIT!

This is what is in store at Harvest Free Will Baptist Church, 5903 East Dupont Road in Fort Wayne on Saturday, August 3rd.  The event begins with Garte’s Fish Fry featuring an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4pm to 7pm.  The cost for the fish fry is $6.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12.

The Sixth Annual “SINGING IN THE SON” concert follows the fish fry at 7pm.  Ministering in this year’s concert will be groups, THE SQUIRE PARSONS TRIO and MENDED WINGS.  No admission will be charged for this Southern Gospel concert, but a love offering will be received for the benefit of Child Evangelism Fellowship in memory of Bud Steinman, a founding member of Harvest Free Will Baptist Church and long-time board member of CEF.  A representative of CEF will be present to explain the ministry of that organization.  The church is located off State Road 1, behind the Dairy Queen at the Leo Crossing Shopping Center.  For further information and directions call Pastor Jeff Sloan at 483-2590 or Praise Promotions at 625-3476.

KWVA MEETING

The meeting of the Korean War Veterans Assn., Indiana Chapter One will resume on August 10th, at the American Legion Post #82 on Harris Road.  Meeting time will be at 9am with breakfast beginning at 8am.  Friends and spouses are welcome.

Our last garage sale was so popular we’ve decided to change it from an Annual to a Bi-Annual garage sale.  The time of the sale will be announced as soon as we fill up our Scout Cabin Garage again.  This is an opportunity to not only get rid of your old junk but to purchase some terrific bargains.  Got a full garage/basement/attic/lake cottage you want emptied? (Sorry we don’t “clean” garages, basements, and attics, etc – we just pick up sellable items.)  Want to get rid of your old toys, tools, cooking utensils, furniture, antiques, collectibles, and stuff you didn’t get rid of in your last garage sale?  The members of Portage Creek Camp Association (Sponsors of Boy Scout Troop 44), said they are willing to come to your house to pick up your donations.  You may drop off your donations at the Scout Cabin but you must call first and arrange for someone to meet you there.  Please don’t drop anything off in front of the door; it will only get wet or be stolen.  Call and have someone meet you there PLEASE.  We will issue a receipt for your tax-deductible donations.  Take a FREE tour of the Boy Scout Cabin while you’re there.

ELMHURST HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1952 REUNION REGISTRATION INFORMATION

The reunion will be held August 10, 2002 at Hall’s Guest House, Washington Center Road, Fort Wayne.  Social Hour at 6pm – Dinner at 7pm.  The cost is $20 per person.  Make checks payable to: Elmhurst Class of ’52. ERIN’S HOUSE FOR GRIEVING CHILDREN

Erin’s House provides by-monthly peer-support groups for children ages 3 to 25 that are grieving the terminal illness or death of someone they love.  The program goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children, teens and young adults can share their experiences and begin the healing process.  Services are provided at no cost to families.  Please call 423-2466 for an application.  Erin’s House has many volunteer opportunities.  Facilitator training dates and times have been scheduled for 2002, so if you’re interested, please give us a call.

GIRL SCOUT TROOP TO MEET AT SCOUT CABIN

Girl Scout Troop #850 (Junior/Cadette) will be meeting at the Portage Creek Camp Association Scout Cabin, corner of Lower Huntington Road and Ardmore Avenue, every Tuesday evening from 6:30pm to 8pm, starting August, 27, 2002.  Anyone interested in joining or helping with the troop, please contact Troop Leader Mary Shepard at 436-2422.

RILEY HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN FUNDRAISER

The Golf Dome Family & Event Center will sponsor the Harris Cup Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 1pm.  The qualifying tournament will consist of the low 75 entrants during the month of July.  Participants may enter as many times as they wish throughout July simply by purchasing a qualifying attempt for an additional $1 donation to Riley Hospital for Children.  The Golf Dome Family & Event Center will match every $1 donated to equal $2 per entrant for Riley Hospital.  The winner of the August 3 tournament will receive an all expenses paid trip to the Harris Cup National Miniature Golf Finals in Statesboro, Georgia on Saturday, September 28, 2002.

Riley Hospital for Children is one of 170 hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network, a charity organization that provides medical care for 17 million children each year.  In 2001, Children’s Miracle Network raised more than $229 million through fund raising activities like this event.  For more information contact Eric at the Golf Dome Family & Event Center, 432-8783.

GEORGE BEALS IS FEATURED ARTIST FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST

Come and view the works of George Beals.  George’s work has been on display in the Art Source gallery since it opened in 1993.  In his honor, his wife Doris keeps his work in circulation.  She is a supporting member of the Art Source.  Most of George’s work, are landscapes and seascapes done in watercolors, acrylic, and pastels.  A quote from George, “All my life I have had an interest in reproducing the beauties of God’s Creation.”  He counted it a privilege to be able to paint scenes that people could identify with and enjoy.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO DELIVER HOMEBOUND MEALS

Homebound Meals, a non-profit organization, has served the city of Fort Wayne since 1971 and delivers noon meals Monday to Friday to people who are unable to prepare their own meals due to age, illness, or disability.  Special diets are available.  We need volunteer drivers to deliver noon meals once a week Monday through Friday to homebound people who are unable to prepare their own meals.  Contact Judy Gregg at 422-3296.

The department of Veterans Affairs, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, 2121 Lake Avenue, in co-operation with the K.W.V.A. Quiet Warriors Chapter of Indiana, welcome the community to bring in their worn, torn, and tattered flags for disposal in the proper manner.  There is a flag collection barrel in the main entrance of the VA Hospital.

Honoring the Veterans Miami Indians of Indiana will be hosting the 7th annual Mihsihkinaahkwa Powwow on August 9th, 10th, and 11th 2002, in Morsches Park, Columbia City, Indiana.

Time: 10AM to 2PM

Place: Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1819 Reservation Drive, Waynedale

Mt. Calvary is hosting a sign-up event to enroll eligible Waynedale citizens into 3 prescription drug cards: the Pfizer Share card, the LillyAnswers card, and the Together Rx discount card. To be eligible for these cards, an applicant must be enrolled in Medicare (for age or disability); must not have any other prescription drug coverage; and must NOT be eligible for Medicaid. They must not exceed these income guidelines: For Pfizer and Lilly cards: $18,000 single; $24,000 couple per year. For the Together Rx card: $28,000 single; $38,000 couple per year.

The eligibility requirements for income is somewhat unique because it targets those whose income doesn’t allow them to afford other drug coverage, yet whose income is too high to qualify for Medicaid.

JOSEPH and the AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT

Over 50 area children in grades k-high school will be on stage Saturday, August 3 at 8pm and Sunday, August 4 at 2pm at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Putnam Street, Fort Wayne. Presented as a fund-raiser for Edwards Productions and its Stage Directions program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Purchase tickets at the door or by calling 496-9291. All seating will be on a general admission basis.
