MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD

For many, the summer flood in Fort Wayne is a distant memory but others are still trying to recover. As the waters receded last July, much of the damage to homes was very apparent: flooded basements, damaged drywall and loss of property. In the long term, however, flood victims may have discovered additional damage to their homes. The City of Fort Wayne recognizes the need for more assistance and is taking steps to make sure services are available.
The City has teamed up with Church World Services, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and local faith-based and community-based organizations to create the Allen County Long Term Disaster Team. The team is working to make sure flood victims have help available to address their long term needs long after the floodwaters have receded. We know that funds from FEMA and insurance companies often do not cover all of the damages associated with flooding. This team was formed to find out what needs are still unmet and which local organizations can best meet those needs.
Surveys were recently distributed in flood-damaged areas to give residents an opportunity to inform the City and disaster team of persistent flood related problems. Once the completed surveys are returned, trained volunteers will follow up with flood victims to further evaluate their needs. The City and local service agencies will determine the best ways in which to help residents receive additional aid.
While the team waits for the surveys to be returned, some help is already underway. One group is already working to put together Christmas boxes for flood victims who lost decorations that may have been stored in basements and damaged or contaminated by floodwaters. It is a small step toward helping flood victims fully recover from the summer disaster.
