THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
THE 1942 ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
Before the World Series this year some people were telling us that maybe the 2004 Cardinal team was the best Cardinal team ever. I guess these people telling us this, were baseball experts, as why else would we be listening to them? I thought I’d refresh my memory so I picked up my copy of the Baseball Encyclopedia to look up some information about this 1942 Cardinal team.
Some of the players were: Walker Cooper, Mort Cooper, Jimmy Brown, Enos “Country” Slaughter, Stan Musial, Whitey Kuroski, Marty Manor, Johnny Hopp, Terry Moore, Max Lanier, Johnny Beazley and Howie Pollet. Not too bad a ball club.
Let’s look at who they beat in the World Series that year, four games to one. The team they beat had some fairly good players: Phil Rigguto, Joe DiMagggio, Joe Gordon, Charlie Kelly, Bill Vickey, Red Ruffing, Tiny Bonham, spud Chandler, and Hank Bovowy (well known to Cub fans) they were the New York Yankees.
Why don’t these experts get off the jug there’re on, trying to convince us that the ball players are much better now. I really don’t see it that way. How do you fell about it? That’s the way I saw it.
