The Menard’s store – Southtown Centre is open for business and will be more likely to succeed as part of the renaissance of the south side of Fort Wayne if each of us shops there now and then. Construction of the new Walmart store and the Regional Public Safety Academy is also progressing well. Congratulations to Mayor Graham Richard for sticking to his guns and moving these projects forward despite having to cope with many obstacles during the last few years.
Fort Wayne’s “Tox-away Day” when you can dispose of toxic lawn chemicals and oil based paints, etc, is scheduled for 9am to 2:30pm, Saturday, Sept. 9. The specific location is to be determined. For a few bucks you can get rid of these materials that obviously should never be placed in your trash container or flushed down the drain.
There’s recently been quite a bit of discussion about possibly building a new baseball park in downtown Fort Wayne in a few years. The thought is that such a move would strengthen the resurgence of our downtown. It seems to me that a facility which is open for 3-4 months a year would be much less likely to draw visitors downtown than (for example) an indoor youth sports facility which could operate year ’round. In fact, the current Memorial Coliseum-Baseball Stadium complex is on the edge of the current downtown area already—the “downtown” of the future will likely include the current Coliseum and Wizards’ ballpark. Eventually the baseball stadium will need to be remodeled but I’m not enthusiastic about moving the facility at this time.
