Maria Sutherland

Maria Sutherland is a community advocate that enjoys being involved in opportunities that encourage engagement and connection. Her passion for the natural environment has also led her to become a Naturalist at Lindenwood Nature Preserve where she currently works to provide interactive methods for kids and adults alike to enjoy and connect with the great outdoors.  Maria was born and raised in Bolivia and had the opportunity to grow up surrounded by the Andes Mountains, the Amazon Rainforest, and the high plains of the Altiplano. The beauty of the Bolivian people and their rich culture and traditions is something she continues to admire and hold close to her heart. She has now lived in Fort Wayne for over 7 years where she strives to use her passions and background for positive community development and education.

She has worked as a volunteer with Southwest Honey Company for the past 5 years as a Special Events Assistant and Beekeeper. Following her passion, she also worked with Allen County – Purdue Extension to create a 4-H Youth Development Garden Club. Furthemore, she has used her background to be involved in multicultural activities such as being a board member of Bridging Worlds – a nonprofit whose mission is to support educational and cultural activities that celebrate diversity and nurture empathy. She also worked as a Spanish facilitator for Healthy Eating Active Living, a partnership program run by St. Joseph Community Health Foundation and Parkview Health.

Maria has enjoyed finding ways to immerse herself in learning from diverse cultures and ways of thinking as well as being a steward for our natural environment while living in Fort Wayne.  As a writer at the Waynedale News, she is able to express her love for community and nature by sharing the exciting events and opportunities available in our area.
