The 2007 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Award was presented to Elmhurst High School senior Christine D. Moser. Christine was one of six scholars chosen in Allen County from seventy-four applicants.

The Lilly Endowment is an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family — J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli — through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company.

In keeping with the wishes of the three founders, Lilly Endowment exists to support the causes of religion, education and community development. The Endowment affords special emphasis to projects that benefit young people and promote leadership education and financial self-sufficiency in the nonprofit, charitable sector.

The Lilly family’s foremost priority is to help people build a better life. Although the Endowment also supports efforts of national significance and an occasional international project, they remain primarily committed to their home state, Indiana.

As a 2007 Lilly Endowment Scholar, Christine will receive full tuition and fees paid to the Indiana College of her choice and an annual $800 stipend for books and equipment.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is designed to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and increase awareness of the potential of Indiana’s community foundations to improve the quality of life of the state’s residents.

Christine was ecstatic and completely surprised by the award. The day of the award, she came to school dressed in basketball sweats, expecting a normal day of academics and sports.

Principal Barb Gentry requested that she go home and change to more formal attire, pretending that she wanted Christine to give a tour to area administrators. Christine was more than a little put out by the inconvenience, but dutifully obeyed as instructed.

Later in the day, Barb personally went to Christine’s class and led her to the awards presentation where her supporters were waiting for her.

It was an emotional time, both for Christine and all her supporters. She has plans to attend Taylor University in Upland Indiana, majoring in Chemistry and Pre-Med.
